Hi,

I have a torn meniscus (often called cartliage) which needs fixing. It's been over 2yrs and while I've been told it can't be repaired I still need an arthoscope and for it to be trimmed/evened up. I was wondering if anyone has had this surgery here and if so where and how much was it. Also what was the recovery like and were u happy with the results? I live in Chiang Mai and have seen one doc here but would like a second opinion. I would travel to BKK if I felt that would represent more success with the surgery. The quote I had here incidentally is 70,000baht.

Thanks in advance for any advice one may offer.

Several TV members have had this surgery with good results

See this thread http://www.thaivisa...._1#entry4702123

Cost will vary greatly by surgeon and hospital.

Be sure to have a surgery who specializes in knee issues. There are a number of them in Bangkok most notably these at Bumrungrad (listed in alphabetical order)

Of the above Drs. Mason and Panya have been used by many TV members and a search in this forum will find many firsthand recommendations.

Surgery at Bumrungrad is high end in terms of cost, if that is a constraint you might inquire whether the doctor has privileges at another hospital as many do. Or, you could consult just for the second opinion and plan on having the surgery in CM if you are confident of the qualifications of the surgeon you saw there. If you don't know what his qualifications are do not hesitate to ask (nicely, of course)...it's your knee. (Look for a residency or fellowship in a western country or Japan with emphasis on arthoplasty).

Doc Mason worked his magic on my knee the thursday before xmas at 6am.

I walked out of the hospital about 10.30am.

Today is 2 weeks later and just got back from a 10k bike ride with my son, was walking without crutches maybe 4 days after it.

Downside is the cost.....even though insurance is paying....I hope....it was 150k baht.

Your insurance company must not be a US firm angry.png

Congrats on the outcome! Sounds like some good doctors there too. The US has some great ones for this sort of thing.

I was wondering if some people live with it and don't have trouble later in life.

I ripped mine on a dirtbike years ago and just live with it.

Not US.

I hurt mine this time 5 months ago....the soreness would come and go...if I twisted it or ran or something it would get very sore for a few days to a week, sometimes not walk on it.....so when it is sore that much, you cannot just put up with it for years...best to get repaired......they removed half of it and trimmed it.

I did my other knee about 5 years ago and it was painful, could not walk properly every day, so had to be repaired no choice.

It seems every situation is different and if it is not hurting much and effecting daily life, then leave it until it does I guess if having it repaired now is a problem for whatever reason.
