I CANNOT GO WITH MY PASSPORT JUST TO THE BORDER AND GO BACK, I NEED TO GO TO THE EMBASSY TO GET A PROPER VISA. THAT MEANS AT LEAST 7,000 BAHT. IF I OVERSTAY, IT WILL COST SOME 4,000.- AND YES, I AM LAZY AS WELL... :-)

Cheapest & easiest end to potential huge hastle (providing citizens of your contry get border visa, & that you are in Bangkok) would be--- Hualampong train station---3rd class train to Hat Yai(under 300 baht)---motorcycle taxi to---local bus to Padeng Baesar(50 baht)lots of stops-motorcycle taxi familiar with visa run routine will magically apear carrying most of the correct forms even if he doesnt speak english 50 baht for return trip Thailand immigration pay fine Malaysia immigration do papers back to Thai immigration.& either wait for cheap bus back to Hat Yai or have motorcycle taxi take you to minibus in town (no extra charge for me) Much faster & no indetirminate wait. Cathay guest house is a good Backpackers Center & reasonable, very nice people. Interesting trip, poor but many nice people. good luck & Chineese New Year it will be very crowded. Sooner you do it the better

Tongdee, I don't understand what you are trying to say.

Your advice could get people in more serious trouble.

You said something about "border visa"...... I assume you

are refering to Border Pass. This border pass is issued only to Thai

citizens who are staying in bordering states near Malaysia.

Finally, you said somthing about Malaysian immigration..... my advice

to you is that you don't fool around with them. They are very strict,

and they follow the rules by the book. And finally..... as a friendly

advice if you are in Malaysia..... If you overstay, you will be

arrested and if found guilty, you may pay a fine or sent to jail....

or both. No such thing as paying a fine at the airport or check out

point as provided by Thailand.

Choke di nah, krap. Sawatdi krap !

PS: ARE THE DOCTORS LIKELY TO ISSUE SOME SORT OF A CERTIFICATE FOR ME (question - how much do I have to bribe them?)? CAN I JUST WALK INTO A HOSPITAL OR DO I HAVE TO KNOW SOMEONE?
hey doctor pat pong, i like this one, its right up there with the guy that suggested the US Embassy in Bangkok was US territory and that should count as leaving the country for a quick visa run.

At some hospitals they have people that will help you get a "SHORT" extension from Immigration while you are in the hospital but only if your visa is about to expire while you stuck in a hospital bed.

but come on, walk in with Johnny Walker Black bottles or a few thousand baht and they are going send you to the mental ward.

yes you can go to a border on a bus and pay your overstay , then return the same day with a 30 day entry, even though you should get a real visa from an embassy.

"

I wouldn't bet on this approach either. I overstayed less than a week, arrived at airport with money and ticket. I was escorted (Police) to the local Magistrate, spent the afternoon sweating it out in custody (officer down the hall), paid a heavy fine and was allowed to leave on the next available plane that evening. Passport stamped reflecting the whole incident.

thanks for your honest post digs...there are millions of hairy incidents that of course never end up on this forum.

bottom line, overstay is illegal and anything can happen between a fine or jail.

I went on a visa run to the Poipet/Arayaprattet border on a bus. One guy was three days over on his visa, we all went through into Cambodia, he was pulled and taken away, I presume a detention centre. He didn't come on the bus back, the driver just laughed and I guess he has to sort himself out.

I bet it didn't help that he half drunk, swigging beer and looked like a hooligan, skinhead, tattooos etc, for all I know he might have had a heart of gold.

Lesson #1 NEVER overstay even by one day!

Unknown to me my son overstayed his 30 day visa by 8 months after he said he was leaving and returning every month.

After 6 months you cannot go to the Immigration office as they will arrest you straight away.

This very morning we took him to the airport, went with him to immigration check point and paid 20,000 THB as a fine (maximum possible) and then he left for England.

The immigration officier made it quite clear that if he had been caught in the street or similar somewhere if would have gone to prison for 2 years and then been deported and not allowed back into the country ever.

As it is he is now blacklisted for 1 year.

It never makes sense to break the rules and a black mark will always be there.

I doubt that he is blacklisted for 1 year. Can you verify that information? What does his overstamp read? Could you scan it in and post here?

Can anyone tell me how long you would be detained in the Immagration Detention Centre if caught on an over stay visa before being deported.

The offender works off the fine at the rate of 200 baht per day, so if someone were 20 days over and had no funds, he would have to stay in the detention center for 20 days. In the case of max overstay, if the offender can get a ticket, he can make a plea for leniency before the magistrate and possibly get the fine/jail time reduced, but still, definite jail time involved. Best to come up with

the money if at all possible.

you can't work off your fine by spending days in jail!!!!!!!!!

this only works for minor offences (traffic violations etc.) where the person can't pay the fine.

you'll stay in jail 'till you have the funds to get out of Thailand and you'll get a blacklisting as a bonus!

the Thai government does not use taxpayer's money to extradite foreigners who overstay.

Opalhort is 100 per cent correct as usual. The only Thai concession is a free bus ride to the airport to give effect to the deportation order.

Good point about the Thai government not paying for extradition.

The offender must come up with a ticket in order to get out of jail. What I wrote about working off the fine still applies, so if someone is without funds and is on overstay, it's essential they arrange a ticket before trying to settle with immigration.
