Queen Elizabeth II visits Prince Philip after heart surgery

CAMBRIDGESHIRE, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- Queen Elizabeth II visited her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, at a hospital in eastern England on late Saturday morning, a day after he underwent heart surgery.

Prince Philip, 90, was taken to Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire on Friday evening after experiencing chest pains. Following tests, Philip was found to have a blocked coronary artery and underwent a 'minimally invasive' procedure of coronary stenting.

On late Saturday morning, Queen Elizabeth II and three of her children flew by helicopter from the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where the royal family is spending Christmas, to Papworth Hospital. They were met by the hospital's chief executive, Stephen Bridge, and John Cunningham, physician to the Queen.

Buckingham Palace said the visit by the Queen and her children Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne lasted for about 45 minutes. "Prince Philip was in good spirits," the palace said in a brief statement.

About an hour after the Queen's visit, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla arrived by car at the hospital. "No further visits by the family [is] expected," the palace said. "The Queen will remain briefed."

The palace said Philip will remain in hospital under observation for a 'short period,' but did not say until when. "Further updates will be issued when appropriate," Buckingham Palace added.

Tough old chap isn't he. I do admire his pluckiness and his ability to access medical care that most elderly citizens would have to wait weeks or months for.

Give it a rest GK.

He is 90 and still working.

Did it occur to you that he probably has health cover?

If you were in the UK with health cover form an insurance you could get exactly the same treatment.
