MINIMUM WAGE WILL BE INCREASED TO 1-5 BAHT IN 35 PROVINCES.

Permanent Secretary of the Labor Ministry Jarupong Ruengsuwan (จารุพงศ์ เรืองสุวรรณ) insisted that the minimum wage in 35 provinces will be increased by 1-5 baht, while 41 other provinces have not requested a wage adjustment. Mr. Jarupong, as a president of the Central Wage Committee, said that the committee will consider minimum wage adjustments recommended by sub-committees on wage adjustments in a meeting this afternoon, adding that the sub-committees have suggested that minimum wages in 35 provinces be increased by 1-5 baht. He said that 41 other provinces have not requested an increase, because of unstable economic and oil price situation. He said that if the economic situation next year improves, the committee will review the wage rates for those provinces.

Mr. Jarupong said that the Labor Ministry cannot raise minimum wages to 233 baht as requested by laborers because the Ministry has to consider whether the employers can pay such rates. He said that economic growth rate and inflation rate also have to be taken into account, otherwise, unemployment could occur.
