Cheap Smart Phone January 2012

The i695 above seems to have a decent feature set for a low-price smart phone...

But I've never heard much about the build quality of I-Mobile's phones....

Tried a recent Wellcom model once at one of the mobile fairs a year or so back... Looked good...good price.... good feature set... But tried the camera... and the picture quality was terrible.

That's the good thing about buying local.. you can try it. I'm hoping that I-mobile will be doing some deals at the upcoming mobile expo at the end of the month.

Where and when is the mobile expo?

Make sure that you can get full access to android market with this phone.many Chinese phones cannot.

How could I make sure of that?

If i were you i would look at the I mobile i695

I695 6995B

$150 = 4500 baht, so I'd save 2500 baht and I'd have an adventure. Thanks for your comments, they have been helpful. I am not sure which way I will go now. I'll post when I decide.

The iMobile

bought a 3G 8500 for gf it was her first smartphone android 1.6, although I'm sure you can get at least 2.1 on it now. The specs were medium-high at the time : 8mp camera camera phone w/ wifi. and it has now been passed on down to sister, and gf now has samsung me. the thai keyboard is much better on samsung....not sure if that has changed now.

just download a keyboard from the market. also you are comparing 1.6 donut with 2.2 or 2.3 BIG difference. But nice to know it's still in use. Nikster throws his old phones in the garbagebiggrin.png

jim,

these phones support android and android market fully.

the chip is mediatek. lenovo uses the same processor in their a60 model phone. google may very well use the 3rd gen when it comes out this year in the droid.

I use 1st gen mediatek, and no issues whatsoever with market compatibility.I have facebook, gmail, opera, trillian, imo, youtube, of course thaivisa app... and tons of other apps and games downloaded and installed all from market

Wellcom A99 4.1" screen running Android 2.3 from any Wellcom shop and many other shops too. 7000bt.

Can anyone tell me where to buy at this price?

Search brings nothing under 9990.

In Chiang Mai in the basement of Kad Suan Kaew on the right hand side - there's a Wellcom shop and another shop nearer the front that had them for sale at6999bt.

Ended up getting the imobile i695 mentioned above, I think it's the same as the A7272+. Seems nice enough. Could have saved some money, but didn't want to wait and deal with the hassle of post/customs etc.
<br /><br />Surprisingly, they do not offer tri/quad band 3g radio (850/900/2100) on all their smartphones. Is it really that expensive for manufacturer to use 3+ band 3g radios? tri/quad band 3g should be standard now 2012.<br /><br />"2nd best time to plant a tree is today." 4/5 Band 3G is still the exception in the Android world.

It is not expensive at all, considering the cheapest 5-Band Nokias cost little more than 4000 Baht.

That's why I'd only recommend the Android top models which are finally up to today's standards. The cheaper and midrange models normally have only 2-Band.

It all depends on what the particular user wants out of their smartphone...

If you just want to make calls and take photos and surf the web a bit... almost any smartphone with a decent data plan from your carrier will do... although camera quality certainly varies widely among different phones.

But if you're into apps and want to be able to add on all kinds of different unique capabilities.... then you'd want an Android phone that ideally gives you access to the Android Marketplace...and at least if not that, to the Amazon Marketplace at a minimum.

And not all Android phones do...depending on the manufacturer and what version of Android OS they have installed. The earlier versions of Android don't allow that, as best as I understand it, whereas OS versions from 2.2 and beyond typically do... Although, some Chinese handsets apparently run later versions of Android OS, but aren't licensed for Google's applications, so they rely on their own much more limited company specific app stores.

I'm not sure where I-Mobile's smartphones fit into that spectrum...and it probably varies from their older models to their more recent ones.

It looks from the I-Mobile website like the I695 phone is running Android 2.3.... but only has a 262K TFT display for a 3.7 in size. That's a bit on the low res side for a 3.7 in display.

But the other specs indicated it's compatible with the Android Market and has the various other Google apps.

I couldn't tell whether that model has Flash video handling capability...though folks can debate as to whether that's an important feature to have or not...

If you want a really entry level phone - but a solid performer - look at the LG Optimus One. Slightly older 2010 entry level model, but it has decent RAM (512Mb) and performs well. 3.2" screen, slightly low res 320x480. Might come with android 2.2 but there is an official 2.3 update out there. This phone is also really well supported by the modding/hacking community because it was a good low cost phone.

Should be around 4500 baht new though http://www.siamphone.com/price/ says its 5990. The LG Optimus Hub is 2011's updated version of the phone. Slightly faster CPU speed but listed at 7990 baht. At that price there are more options.

I don't think flash is a requirement on a smartphone, but there are usually hacks out there to put flash on any rooted android phone.
