mommylukkreung
Hi All! I will be moving to Chiang Rai this April/May to study at Mae Fah Luang University. I need to live off campus as I have a small child, and was thinking of trying to find a place in Wiang district because it is close to everything including daycare facilities for my son. I realize that the University is quite far outside of town, and that I will need reliable transportation to and from. Does anyone know if there is a regular bus that goes to the university from town? I am just trying to see my other options before needing to rent a bike to take everyday. Also, should I try and find a place to stay before I arrive, or when I arrive? Can anyone suggest a good way to find a decent home to rent not over 5000baht? Thanks for your help!

harrry
I would think about staying nearer the Uni if I were in your position. It will be cheaper. It is a better environment for your son and preschool will be available there too.And the costs and time let alone the risk of travel which I am sure will soon be by motorcycle is greater than if you just travel by motorcycle from near the Uni. I think costs of about 80 baht a day by aircon mini bus or very slow travel in a very crowded bus from town would be a deciding factor.
mommylukkreung
I am a little concerned about the travel on the super highway, harry. The only problem is that I haven't been able to find a preschool in that area. Where or how should I be looking? I have looked on at the lanna realty website, as well as other realty websites and I will keep my eyes out. I am looking for a place to live under 8000THB. Looking through the websites I have found many places from 2500-5000THB(ideal), whic keeps my hopes up. I just need to figure out the other details. I am open to any suggestions anyone may have, and definately willing to consider boarding with a farang family or taking a nanny. So my arms are open to any words of wisdom from my fellow farangs of Chiang Rai!
sceadugenga
Come for a few weeks and look around, many places are never advertised and are rented by word of mouth. Asking among the university staff would be a good start.
pomchop
Riding a motorbike on the super highway to mah fah luang in the rainy season would not be a lot of fun let alone not really very safe.
sceadugenga
There were a few damp ones out there when I came though town from the airport this morning.
ThunderDuck
If you are an experienced rider the super highway is safe enough ... most accidents occur at the u-turn breaks in the median strip. Otherwise catch a bus / songthaew.

skybluestu
One of my neighbours will move back to BKK at the end of April to start a new job and wants to rent his house. It is a 3yr old two-storey house and is fully furnished. It is located on a small moo-baan in Bandu so very close to Rajabhat and MFU and about 10-15mins from town. The moo-baan is a cul-de-sac so very quiet with no traffic, most neighbours are professional and work at MFU. As I said, it is fully furnished including x1 air-con, water-heater, fridge and washing machine. He wants 12,000baht per month but would accept less if a long-term contract. Please PM me if interested.
