Hello,

coming from Lao PDR, with a passport (Finland) under 6 months valid, is it possible to enter to Thailand with arrival visa, in the meanings of entering directly to the embassy of country of origin, for purposes of making a new passport?

Yes as long as passport is valid 30 days it should not be a problem.

Thailand (TH)

Passport required.

- Nationals of Finland can enter with passports and/or

passport replacing documents valid for the period of

intended stay.

Visa required, except for A touristic stay of max. 30 days:

It's not an arrival "visa". It's simply a permission to enter for up to 30 days without a visa. You'd have trouble getting certain (all?) types of visa but a 30 day exempt shouldn't be an issue. In the unlikely event they asked to see anything, it would be a ticket out of Thailand within 30 days.

I am not sure about that, this is what it says on the Thai embassy website in my country...

To enter the Kingdom without visa you must provide that:

  1. Your purpose of visit is only for tourism
  2. You have the nationality of the above mentioned countries. Your passport must valid at least 6 months from the date that you enter to Thailand.
  3. You must possess adequate finances for the duration of stay in Thailand (i.e., cash 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family)
  4. You arrive in and depart Thailand by any means of transport (air, land,or sea) through immigration checkpoints, any confirmed tickets to leave Thailand from the arrival date at the port of entry in Thailand must be obtained.
  5. You are required to obtain a visa if going to thailand for business, conference, research, study etc., or if you are planning to stay for more than 30 days for tourism.

That is for Consulate to issue a tourist visa - there is no such requirement for entry, only that your passport covers the time allowed. A visa exempt entry is 30 days (or actually 15 days by land) so should not be a problem if passport is valid for longer than that period of time.

Maybe one....but....

I am not familiar with the Finnish procedures regarding a new passport's issuance but that is the thing you should worry about .

As far as I know the French Embassy would not do so, rightfully I might add.

Well, the consulate is obviously not up to date, mark that they write "To enter the Kingdom without visa you must provide that".......

The mfa website says nothing about 6 month, so you are right about that, and reminds me to never trust the consulate website.smile.png

So if you want to renew your French passport, you must go back to France?

Not to be argumentative - everybody's entitled to their opinion - but I'm just curious as to why you consider this "right"?

Correct, unless you are "resident" registered with the French authorities

Consulates take care of their Nationals whenever they get in trouble, hopefully, and "service" the "residents"

Tourists, when they have the kind of problems cited above, were not supposed to have left without planning ahead , therefore should be holding a more than six month old passport

To add to that, the administratiion do not have the means to make the background checks necessary to its issuance

Of course it it comes to the worst, lost passport, hospitalisation..... a French citizen would get a pass allowing their departure from the territory to France
