A British man is set to be sent back to the United Kingdom to face a rape and molestation trial after the Criminal Court ruled yesterday that he be extradited from Thailand within 30 days.

Indicted by a Cardiff court for his alleged rape and sexual molestation in August 2009, Paul Martin Smithers will be returned to the UK after the Criminal Court ruled that criteria for him to be deported were in line with an extradition treaty with Britain.

Smithers was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport on November 2 last year. He admitted to being the person in the Cardiff Court indictment order and did not appeal against the Criminal Court's extradition order.

He has a great Hollywood haircut for being in Thai prison for for a few months. Those Thai prison barbers are great.

And of course, when discussing an alleged UK sex offender who apparently managed to abscond while being be too clever for UK police and immigrations, we can still manage to manufacture a reason to Thai bash with a totally baseless comment about bribery in Thailand ... regarding a major issue like a haircut. In Uk, I guess, police only accept bribes when helping news reporters hack telephone numbers of kidnapped children or other trivial things.

The scum bag should of been left in the Thai prison and the uk pay for his stay.

1. Cheaper option.

2. More of a punishment, compared to are holiday camp prisons.

So you don't believe in people getting a fair trial? Sounds like you've found him guilty based on a short report on the internet. I'd hate to be an innocent person on trial with you on the jury.

Leaving him in a Thai prison isn't a cheaper option for the Thai authorities.

Exactly.

Anyway, i didn't find him guilty from the short report. That would just be wrong......I didn't even need to read it. Just look at him, guilty as sin. giggle.gif

Quite right and don't forgot the member of the UK Royal protection detail who sold phone numbers of the Royals and their staff for a meagre 1000 pounds. Not much excuse in UK for corrupt police given the salary levels. There are probably a number of barbers in the prison at any given time who can easily turn out a reasonable looking haircut if they can get some scissors. You would think that most posts in this thread would be congratulating the cooperation between the two forces and the fact that a suspect in a sex crime case was going to face trial ( I don't know whether he is guilty or not). His haircut is hardly hollywood anyway. It doesn't even look like its been combed

And you did say the UK should pay for his stay! Why do people not read before posting?

I assume he was arrested on the way in to the country (????) rather than out. Good job I say, we certainly don't need any more perverts and sex-criminals here - and send a message Thailand is not a place for such people to abscond to. Good job all round!

Why he heck do you call him a scum bag, when you know nothing about the alleged crimes, the man might be innocent (until found guilty)

For all you know he might have had concentual sex with a 40 yo bag who changed her mind afterwards, you dont know, we don't know!!!

Hey monkey, you do have an agenda, don't you? It's hard not to notice that you're a serial Thai-hater who would bash the Thais for just about any reason, fact or fiction. Yet, you would defend a farang who in most likelihood is a certified perv. Standing up for your own kind, it would appear.

was he teaching English here?

Paedophile Paul Smithers dies in prison before facing more charges

A paedophile sex offender who was extradited from Thailand to south Wales has died of cancer in prison before he could face further charges. Paul Martin Smithers, 59, skipped bail in 2000 and it took almost a decade to track him down to Southeast Asia.

He was flown to the UK last year, and was jailed for 12 years for rape and indecent assault. He was due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday to enter pleas on more than 50 further charges. Smithers had been held in a Thai prison for three years before he was flown back to the UK in April 2012, accompanied by detectives from South Wales Police.

He had skipped bail from Cardiff Crown Court in 2000 before he could be sentenced for child sex offences. Last year, he was finally jailed for 12 years for rape and indecent assault. He was due to appear before Cardiff Crown Court this week to enter a plea on more than 50 further charges. However, Smithers died of cancer on 20 February in the hospital wing at Parc Prison in Bridgend.
