I have been to Chiang Mai many times but never been to the Railway Station area.

I will be going there to catch the free shuttle bus to the Royal Flora show so thought of going earlier to explore the area and have lunch there.

Can anyone recommend any good nice food there where the locals eat ?

Any other interesting things to see or do in the area ?

Thanks.

There is a place called the Upper Crust across the street from the Railway Station entrance that has some western food, and the best mango chiffon cheesecake ever!!!!

But seriously, on the left side as you head toward the river, there is a talat that has some really good food., it is down a little a little soi so not easy to find but it is large. Probably shown on a map of the area.

Thank you but how many mins walk/how far is this market from the railway station main road ? Any exceptionally good food there or just the standard food like any other market ? My standard is high :-)

Fried chicken stand further down from Upper Crust place is called Joy! Is a legendary fried chicken in Chiang Mai (To eat with sticky rice) Upper Crust place has the best Mango cream pie thing and the Sandwich cookies currently supplied to Starbucks.

It's a pretty dreary area; Charoen Muang is mostly small Chinese-Thai machine shops, Tung Hotel road is not much of anything. Sanpakhoi market okay as a market, but it's just a market.

The first really interesting area would be pretty much along the river.

There is an excellent (small, open) Southern Thai food place on the corner of Charoen Muang and Thewee Uthit Road (the next one East of the road that Sayuri is on (Bamrungrat Rd.) En there are Chinese Buns at Wikul shop on Charoen Muang. That's about it for food. Those would be two good places 'where the locals eat' though the steamed bun place is more takeaway.

Dreary apart from the Soapy and the apartment block that has the whole 1st floor as a Fishbowl.

That's the response you were looking for. GREAT fried chicken! THEN go to the Upper Crust for dessert as their entrees aren't much. Mango chiffon/ambrosia cake is absolutely delicious. The Oreo like dessert is also delicious, but half the size it used to be before the wife started running the business.

What, Pandora? Doesn't get drearier than that.

Not to mention seedy.

Good little open air food place in front of it though.

That is why I mentioned it, I think the prepared foods there are above average in quality and presentation.

Can't see signs of any talat or market near the train station so dare not venture out far.

Saw a fried chicken store near Upper Crust but see no signs of the name "Joy", bought a piece of thigh(really nice) and ate at a local restaurant few doors away with a plate of Lad Prakow with crispy pork(so-so); then hop over to Upper Crust for coffee(not really good) and the mango pie thing(really perfect, even the crust !!)
