webfact
Tsunami Survivor New Finnish President HELSINKI: -- With 62.6 percent of the vote Sauli Niinistö was Sunday elected for the 12th President of Finland. The new president has had a life marked by ups and downs. In 1995 he lost his wife in a car accident, and, as we wrote on Thursday, in 2004 Niinistö managed to survive the tsunami in Thailand as he, in collaboration with his son, clinging to a tree while the tsunami raged. The 63 years old attorney, who has a background as Vice President of the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, created a name for himself as Finance Minister from 1993 to 2006. During the election campaign, he profiled himself as a people’s man, and he even expressed remorse over some of his previous decisions as a Minister, but according to the Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet, it is his reputation as a financial responsible Politician that has made him popular among the Finish people. The choice of the conservative politician marks a break with the Socialists Party, who had the presidency for the last 30 years, the last 12 years represented by Tarja Halonen.
