A disappointing message from Thaksin; in order to really develop Thailand needs to take a strong departure from the old ways of army-backed feudalism. Such a meek message from Thaksin is very disappointing for everyone who wants Thailand to develop in a freer and fairer society.

It shows -if that wasn't blatantly obvious already- that he cares more about himself than about Thailand. Thailand needs an Aung San Suu Kyi, someone who doesn't waver also when being under arrest. He/she would be in jail in a second of course, just like they do in Burma with people who don't tout the official line.

Burma (Myanmar) seems to be on a better trajectory these days than Thailand. A country in the deep trouble Thailand has found itself in needs a Suu Kyi, a Lech Walesa, Vaclav Havel. Nelson Mandella and the like. Yet Thailand gets two Shinawatras running the place, one here and one there, Chalerm and the rest of them. Thaksin actually tries the travesty to call himself a Mandella, which tells us all we need to know about T Himself. A continental shift we all missed seems recently to have placed Thailand in SE Asia instead of sub-Saharan Africa.

Although the article is written in English, it is hard to believe that English is the author's first language. Not only did the author seem to be ignorant of all things Thai, But he seemed to give a pass to Thaksin for the thousands of people he killed needlessly just because he "angers easily".

The article was sloppily written and weakly thought through. It's hard to believe the guy who wrote it is an academic. More to my point, I remember when the Korea Times was a respected English language newspaper.

Here is the opening paragraph from that article.

"DUBAI ― Despite the blockbuster election of his sister Yinglick Shinawatra as Thai prime minister last summer, her much-older brother Thaksin, himself prime minister from 2001-2006, is still in exile in a luxury townhouse in Dubai, isolated and restless, awaiting the opportunity to return."

I wasn't aware of the fact that he was exiled. I always thought he could return any time he wanted to and there would be a huge crowd waiting to welcome him and give him free housing and meals.

Want a stupid article written get one of Thaksin's hired rabble rousers.

Come on guys, he said sorry and that he will not take revenge.Isn't that enough?

Well I suppose it is IF you believe it and (here is the magic word) trust him and what he says.

Sadly though his track record and the truth seem to be poles apart.

The interview is no more interesting than the people who immediately take note, and issue repetitive boring comment.......there is nothing in this interview that has not been mentioned previously........Thaksin is fading.... by design? yes he would like to return to Thailand, but I cannot see any other way than to be non political persona. If he cannot sell this image, I doubt he will be allowed to return. I wonder if it was not for the Thaksin haters......would Thaksin even make the second page these days

There is nothing preventing him from returning ans serving his jail sentence, nothing at all.

He does not even need a visa nor a plane ticket, just turn himself into the local embassy.

<deleted>, the minimum he requires is affirmation that no further charges will be brought against him, to do this he must cut some sort of deal for himself......now who do you think must sanction such a deal?

the 2006 coup was a tragedy to democracy

Hilarious, coming from the PM who actually said "democracy is not our aim", while in-power. laugh.png

“Where in the world is a single-party government called a dictatorship? What's wrong with it when people have faith in me?”

Thaksin Shinawatra

Good point.

This subject has been done to death already, but you are absolutely right."Nothing to stop him from returning to Thailand.....................nothing!"

He only has to say he will stay out of politics, but his ego won't let him.

His "jail" sentence would probably be 2 days at the Peninsuala Hotel under guard while enjoying all the facilities.

He has his own jet so no need to fly Thai or Emirates.

He would be welcomed by thousands of red shirts.

BUT, he won't do it because he is a coward.

People have put their lives on the line and died for this person and yet he remains........ a coward. No morals, no spine, no character.

The Thaksin appreciation club would i'm sure love that as they would no longer have to spend all the time they do rushing to defend things he does or things he says... things that can't be defended from any sort of logical or reasoned standpoint. I do sympathise. It's a tough job some of you guys have taken upon yourselves to do.

No, he needs to show he is an HONORABLE man and serve his time. He had no problem sending many to their deaths for their alleged crimes with NO trial. He belongs in jail, in fact the ICC (International Criminal Court) should put him on trial for crimes against humanity.

Actually off topic drivel like yours makes it rather easy, hence we view the compulsive prempting posts by the haters at the outset of every Thaksin thread, a vain effort at attack with the usual bluderbuss effect.......generally missing the target with all but a few non harming pellets....but if you feel this is a worthwhile pastime, have a group hug and carry on

Now read the post again you took the extract from, and try to remain on topic by issuing a comment......or perhaps you are peeved because you agree?

No? Read your response above, it actually verifies my assessment as to the only way Thaksin will return.....crazy.gif ..

The article just lets Thaksin talk, to communicate his message, to let him do his posturing. Like 473geo says, there is nothing new here.

Indeed, indeed. Mostly the article confirms people in their opinion on k. Thaksin, be it pro or anti. Nothing new in that coffee1.gif

My comment was a direct response to something you had posted, so if you want to whine about it being off topic, whine about yourself for having brought it up.

I also fail to see where is the problem here or why the journalist is bad or the Korean Times a bad publication with low standards as some have said here.

Its about Thaksin points of view and Thaksins stance - who expect him to tell us something else?

Doubtful,

Why should mr T be above other Thais? He should show he is one with them and serve his time.

That would actually be a smart political move, but obviously his megalomania won't allow him to do that.

I think before you judge one person as trying to be above other Thai.........

You would do well to examine the plethora of ways available to avoid a prison sentence in Thailand

One of the best is to be part of or connected to the Shinawatra clan.
