February 14, 201214 yr Does anybody know? If one changes one's ISP eg. by moving to another country can this be detected by the forum owner/organiser? Nothing duplicit in this and nothing to do with me either. A lady friend of mine (in England) likes to contribute to a football site which is about the team she supports here (Brighton.) She has decided to make a break from her boyfriend and has told him that she is working abroad for a short period. She has even gone to the trouble of leaving the area. I cannot guess what was going on for her to resort to this. However, she would still like to contribute to the forum as before. Her problem is that her ex is a part owner of the forum. Will he be able to detect from her posts that she has not actually left the country? Changing her forum name would not help as he would be capable of detecting her style. This all sounds quite bizarre I know, but he has in the past had a tendency to stalk her. In short, could he detect anything about her whereabouts if she continues to post? Oh what a complicated web of deceit do we lead?
February 14, 201214 yr Author The situation is, of course, the reverse to the scenario I mentioned in my opening paragraph.
February 14, 201214 yr Unless she takes steps to hide the fact he would be at least able to tell what country she is in.
February 14, 201214 yr Author Thanks. That's her worry. How could he do that? What steps are there? This is beginning to interest me now and by the way it's my younger sister. I thought it best to be discreet, but it's not necessary. Thanks again. Edited February 14, 201214 yr by Beechboy
February 14, 201214 yr If he has access to the forum backend he would be able to see her IP address. Anyone can lookup an IP address to see where it is registered (What country, what company-ISP). There are methods of hiding or spoofing your IP address by using a proxy or VPN. Google can fill you in on the details.
February 14, 201214 yr Surely the ISP could be the same wherever you are? Only in the same country, You could be anywhere in the UK and have an IP that reports as Orange UK but not if you were in Spain.
February 14, 201214 yr Author I get it and am learning a lot. We should be able to sort something out from your know how. Cheers.
February 15, 201214 yr Go through a free proxy server in the US and you will appear to be in the US as far as I know. There are also several FREE software progs that will hide the ISP too. Edited February 15, 201214 yr by CharlieH
February 16, 201214 yr Every post on any forum records your IP address. The forum MODs can all see this address. This can often be easily used to find the ROAD you live in. Sometimes it can identify you down to 2 or 3 houses. When I was living in the UK and part of a forum, we had friends working in various ISPs and could often just phone them up and ask for the address of an IP number. This was illegal, but easy to do. February 16, 201214 yr Just to make you aware, a savvy admin can often determine if you are using a VPN or proxy from the IP. However, that is as far as they can go and can not determine the country of origin.
February 19, 201214 yr Disable the flash cookies, not the regular cookies...and change the name of the hard drive as well as the user log in name too.
February 21, 201214 yr An alert admin will know there's something up because they will realise she is using a proxy. Use a free proxy service and it's also very possible every time she logs in she will show up as being from different country, a dead giveaway if anyone bothers to look, unless of course she has told her boyfriend she is working as a jet setting international escort...
