Hello all,

I am thinking of using the Air Asia free seat offer for a trip in April. I came up with a routing Bangkok - Kuala Lumpur - Kota Kinabalu - Bangkok. Haven't been to neither places so I'm just curious (and it would look nice on my flight routes map :o )

So, for the ones who have been either in KL and/or KK, please feel free to share your experiences!

What do you need to know about Kuala Lumpur (KL)? I do go there often.

I stayed in Kota Kinabalu for 4 days last year. It was a stop-off on an Air Asia flight to Clark (Phillipines). There is a nice beach area at TanjungAru,about 10km from town. Not very much to see or do in the city.

Used to stop over on the way to Manila but never did the climb up the mountain....Lots of Hotels but place was a bit quiet..might have changed a bit since then (over 15 years ago) :o

Background

Kota Kinabalu is the state capital of Sabah - the second largest state in Malaysia, covering an area of 74,500 sq km. Kota Kinabalu, or commonly refered to as KK, is located on the north-eastern coast of the state, fronting the South-China Sea.

Sabah is known as 'The Land Below The Wind' because, geographically, it is below the typhoon belt. Sabah's population of 1.9 million consists of 32 ethic communities. Sabah's ecological systems, both on land and in the sea, are havens for naturalists.

The People

The three main indigenous groups of Sabah are the Kadazan-Dusun, Murut and Bajau. Making up one-third of the populatipon, the Kadazan-Dusun live in the interior plains, and are mainlt paddy farmers though many have ventured into other trades.

...lots more.... :D

Anything interesting: things to do, good place to stay...

Thanks.

If you want, I can send you some brochures/booklets as my friend represents the Malaysian Tourism but I don't know whether this will be breaking forum rules.

Maybe you can check with the moderator before PM me.

The trek up Mount Kinabalu is a wonderful experience, not to be missed if you are a reasonably good walker. Take a torch, gloves and warm clothes especially hat and jacket. Allow two days. The first day takes you up to the top camp where you sleep in bunk beds in a hut with a simple restaurant, then up VERY early the next mornign to make the summit for dawn. Don't rush that last part as waiting on the top before dawn is VERY cold. After appreciating the wonderful view at dawn, you can get all the way back down in two or three hours, or take your time a bit more if you want.

As someone else mentioned, the town of KK itself has nothing to offer, frankly it is a dump.

KL has much to offer, I will let others wiser than I fill you in on details.

Like you, I jumped on the Air Asia offer. Got a ticket from BKK to KK to Singapore and then back to BKK. All for dirt cheap! I am giving myself one month to do the trip...in mid-April. Can't wait!
