Thaksin holds ‘urgent’ meeting to rebuild solidarity

BANGKOK: -- Struggling to cope with his falling popularity, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday held an “urgent” lunch with faction leaders of his ruling Thai Rak Thai Party at a government safe house to discuss ways to rebuild party solidarity, according to a party source.

The source, who asked not to be named, said that early yesterday morning Thaksin called leading members of the party’s factions believed to be behind a recent attempt to form a new party and invited them to lunch at Baan Phitsanulok, the PM’s official residence, without informing reporters.

At the meeting, the premier admitted he has been very busy with national issues and therefore has had little time to “take care” of the party. He asked the faction leaders to help him re-build party solidarity and promised to attend party MP’s meetings more often, the source said.

During the meeting Thaksin asked the leaders to tell the MPs under their control to be more conciliatory and told them to stop giving interviews to reporters.

Present were Wang Nam Yom faction leaders Somsak Thepsuthin and Suriya Jungrungreangkit, Deputy PMs Suwat Liptapanlop and Pinij Charusombat, Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan, deputy Parliament president Suchart Tancharoen, Culture Minister Uraiwan Thienthong, of Wang Nam Yen, Thaksin’s sister Yaowapa Wongsawat, and Defence Minister Thamarak Isarangura na Ayutthaya.

Wang Nam Yen faction leader Snoh Thienthong, who has been estranged from Thaksin, was not present.
