Parboiled rice exports bring in billions of baht in annual revenue

BANGKOK, 26 February 2012 (NNT) – Thai parboiled rice is popular in overseas markets and generates billions of baht in revenue each year.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Niwat Sutheemeechaikul revealed that Thailand exports around 8-10 million tonnes of rice per year. Out of that figure, 0.7-1 million tonnes are parboiled rice. Exports of parboiled rice earn several billion baht each year; however, their volume declined slightly in 2010. Of the total quantity of parboiled rice exports, about 200,000 tonnes are high-quality rice, worth 1.3 billion baht per year. The main customers of Thai parboiled rice include African and Middle-eastern countries.

Thailand’s main competitors are Vietnam and the US. However, the quality of Thai parboiled rice is still superior to Vietnamese rice. Cambodia also produces parboiled rice; however, the neighbouring country stands a small chance in the competition due to a difficulty in transportation.

Additionally, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which is taking shape in 2015 will allow Thailand a greater opportunity to increase parboiled rice exports as the country will be able to import more paddy from its neighbours, especially Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos while many rice mills in the country are ready to absorb the produce.
