Militants attack NW Pakistan police station, 4 killed

PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least four police officers were killed on Friday when a group of suicide bombers attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan, officials said on Saturday.

The attack occurred on early Friday morning when three militants hurled grenades at the gates of the Kotwali Police Station, also known as the C-division police station, in Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. It triggered an exchange of fire.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Imtiaz Altaf told the Express Tribune that security personnel and police forces quickly retaliated and the three suicide bombers detonated their explosive devices. As a result, four policemen were confirmed killed while six others were reported injured.

The police station is located in the heart of Peshawar and is one of the largest in the city. At the time of the attack, some sixty people were inside the offices.

Abdullah Azzam Brigade spokesman Abu Zarar Said claimed responsibility of the attack, adding that the attack was in retaliation for the killing of top militant leader Badar Mansoor, who was killed as a result of a U.S. drone strike earlier this month in North Waziristan.

The attack comes just one day after a deadly car bomb attack in northwestern Peshawar at the Kohat bus stop, killing at least twelve people, including two children, while about 30 others sustained injuries.
