Buying A Scooter

Featured Replies

I am moving to Chiang Mai on Wednesday for one year. From what I have heard, for that length of time it is better to buy a scooter than to rent one. Would someone please tell me what is the procedure for buying a scooter in Chiang Mai. Specifically, I am talking about getting a license plate, insurance, etc.

I have heard there is a motorcycle market on Saturdays so I am thinking of going down there to look for one. If anyone wants to roll with send me a pm!

Jeff

Buying is easy, just pay the money. Registering it in your name will require a Certificate of Residence from the Immigration office. A valid visa and proof of where you live (rental contract usually good enough). Any efficient bike sales shop will help you through the procedure. Takes a month or so to register, but you can drive away with temp red plates as soon as you pay the money.

For one year you should for sure buy, no doubt.

If you're mechanically minded you should be fine at the bike market, if not I would take someone with you who is. Most are fine but there are some which are not good at all.

Also consider the classifieds on here, there's usually a few scooters & bikes for sale.

Because anything with wheels here holds it's value l would suggest buying new. jap.gif
