BANGKOK: -- Thais are concerned about the Constitution amendment, according to Abac and Dusit polls which revealed their results yesterday.

Abac poll showed that the happiness index of Thais has dropped from January's 6.6 to 6.4 due to the rising cost of living and political conflict caused by the Constitution amendment.

Dusit poll showed that of the total, 63.8 per cent were concerned about the charter amendment since it could bring about conflict among political groups. They also worried that the amendment process, which may involve vested interest, lacks transparency.

Of the total, 53.8 per cent wanted supporters of charter amendment to put public interest before all else; 21.1 per cent wanted charter amendment supporters to carefully examine the charter and the process and not be misled by others; 13.7 per cent wanted supporters to express their political opinion without using violence; 11.2 per cent wanted them to make their decision on a righteous basis.

Of the total, 35.1 per cent wanted opponents of charter amendment to exercise good judgment when receiving information; 30.8 per cent wanted its opponents to put the country’s interest as first priority; 23.7 per cent wanted them to refrain from violence; 10.2 per cent wanted them to examine facts and information involved in the charter amendment.

Of the total, 50 per cent wanted legislators who amend the charter to adhere to righteousness and be politically neutral; 23.8 per cent wanted the legislators to put the public interest before anything else; 16.9 per cent wanted legislators to create public understanding about charter amendment; and 8.7 per cent wanted legislators to be free from political influence.

Asked how to prevent political conflicts that could derive from charter amendment, 43 per cent said people must be allowed to take part in the process through a public referendum or public hearing.

The amendment only serves 2 purposes as pointed out by PAD ,Dems and Army:

1. White wash Thaksin

2. Change 112 law.

1. White wash Thaksin

2. Change 112 law.

3. Removing checks and balances

4. Hamstringing political opponents

5. Setting up a basis for a Shin Political Dynasty

6. Disabling courts

And this is what can be surmised now.

Other tricks may be afoot also.
