Rimmer
German escapes arrest after he fails to return rented motorbike PATTAYA:--A German avoided arrest on Tuesday following allegations he had failed to return a hired motorbike back to its rightful owner. Initially Police were called to an area close to the Pattaya Train Station in East Pattaya following reports of a drunken foreigner who was causing a disturbance. Police arrived and spoke with Mr. Manfred Wagner aged 50 and following a closer inspection of his motorbike it appeared to have been tampered with as if it may have been stolen. The motorbike appeared to be a rental and a sticker featuring a mobile number was seen and Police called the number and minutes later, Khun Vilasinee aged 22, the legal owner of the bike arrived and revealed that her bike had been missing for 3 months after she gave it to a friend who would rent the bike out for a commission. The agent, known as Khun Noi, had rented the bike to the German who went missing and failed to return the bike as promised Full story:http://www.pattayaone.net/pattaya-news/50416/german-escapes-arrest-fails-return-rented-motorbike/ -- Pattaya One 2012-03-07 [newsfooter][/newsfooter]

BookMan
The owner gets her stolen bike back. Loses 3 months rental. Decides from the goodness of her heart not to press charges. German thief walks free. Me thinks something missing here.
petercool
At least it proves that foreigners are not always always targets of Thai police - as many here are quick say. He could have faced a very stiff penalty for drunk driving if he was in fact using the bike and, if so, probably without a helmet.
TexasRanger
Speaking of drink driving, I saw 2 ruskies on a bike today going down the beach road on a scooter, she on the back swigging from a bottle of beer and passing it to the driver who was swigging it too. Talk about blatant.

chops
This happened to me a couple times. Luckily I'm not in jail as I did not know it was a crime to simply be late on returning the bike. Different laws I guess..!

Basil B
It is understandable that there could be a misunderstanding on the return date, and assuming they gave the renter true information as to where they could be contacted, etc., and if it was only a few days over I see it just being a civil matter but where their is deception it it should be a criminal matter and the perpetrators dealt with by the courts, regardless of nationality. ...and following a closer inspection of his motorbike it appeared to have been tampered with as if it may have been stolen The person renting the bike was trying to make a living, as I read it (and the Pattaya Press hardly has much creditability IMHO for portraying a true and fully accurate picture of events) this was an attempt to defraud the renter of income and possible even steel the bike, regardless of their nationality I would have wished for a more severe punishment as to deter the perpetrators and others from committing other crimes. pattayadingo
How about the possibility that the German actually bought the bike as an ex-rental and had no idea it was stolen?
