I just got off the phone with Verizon. Actually I called using the Magic Jack App on my iPod Touch for free. I have maintained a family plan with them for many years. I asked if I want an iPhone 4S what is the deal? They told me I can get a 16 GB for $199 US. A 32 GB for $299. 64GB for $399. I said okay, I live in Thailand, I visit the USA once every year or two and I have a home there. I was then told as long as I am in the US for 60 days and have a US address, I can get my iPhone unlocked, then cancel the US data plan as long as I maintain my account, which my daughter is on. I said, really? I can screw you instead of you always screwing me? Amazing! So next week I'll order one, pay $30 a month more for a data plan, then have have it unlocked. Once again, you have to maintain the data plan for a minimum 60 days. I'll bring an AIS SIM card to make sure it works, then suspend my iPhone from my Verizon account. The unlocked iPhones that are available from Apple are GSM only. No CDMA....

I would encourage you to review the terms and conditions of the contract very, very carefully.

I posted this Verizon iPhone 4S unlock policy previously: (I interpret this to mean that after 60 days, in good standing, you can request an unlock. However, you still have to fulfill the terms of your original contract which requires a 2-year activation and associated Data Pak. The minimum monthly Data Pak is 2 GB/$30, while the minimum voice plan is $39.99/month. The early termination fee is $350. It's not clear to me you can cancel the Data Pak service after 60 days? Nor is it clear to me how one transfers service to another family member/device.)

“It is our standard unlock policy for all Global Phones. You have to have been a customer for 60 days and in good standing (meaning your bill is current) and the phone you want to unlock must be on our network at the time of the request. You call Verizon Wireless before you leave the country and we unlock the SIM. We will honor one unlock every 10 months.” — Brenda Raney, Verizon Wireless Public Relations

I talked with their global division and two other reps. I have a family plan that I will have to keep for two years as my daughter just got an iPhone and she wants to stay on my plan as she has unlimited data on my plan which is no longer offered. I can unsubscribe my iPhone after 60 days and put my old phone back on for $10 a month as it is not a smart phone so no data package. But I will reconfirm everything before I buy.
