Chalerm vows to hunt down drug ring suspects

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung yesterday vowed to smash a suspected methamphetaminedistribution network after possibly millions of "precursor" pills went missing from many state hospitals.

"We must be decisive and we must arrest all involved no matter what occupations they have," said Chalerm, who was visiting Kalasin, where over 350,000 Actifed tablets have disappeared from Kamalasai Hospital.

"I have instructed Narcotics Suppression police, the Narcotics Control Board and the Department of Special Investigation to work closely on the cases. While we worked so hard on the campaign to suppress methamphetamine, now we have unexpectedly found that the source is in hospitals. It was also done by people with high social status. The cases against anyone found guilty must be pursued actively to the end," he said.

Ultimate measures would be taken against people involved in the embezzlement of medicines containing pseudoephedrine from state hospitals amid concerns that the chemical might be used to produce ya ba, he said.

Pol Colonel Wichien Pinduang, the provincial police chief, said after chairing a meeting with investigators that the probe into the missing drugs at Kamalasai Hospital was expected to be finished within three days. The case then will be transferred to Narcotics Suppression police to take legal action against the pharmacists involved.

The pilfering of cold medicine is believed to be related to the illicit drug trade, as pseudoephedrine can be used as an ingredient in the making of both ya ba and ice, he said.

But the inquiry must be handled carefully as the suspects were government officials. They were likely to face fraud and graft charges, he said.

I still maintain that a dedicated intelligence network needs to be functioning correctly, data compiled, assessed and distributed to the departments that need to know. Using the anti-drugs theme for political gain only gives the heads-up that something is going to happen; do not inform the public, keep it in-house and let the anti-drugs units do their jobs.

No there are not. Pseudoephedrine is by far the best treatment for congestion. Ephedrine is better but has unpleasant side effects, it is also banned.

I think it is good that he talk specifically about punishing the responsables even if they are rich people with good positions, although this is probably just words. I don't agree with death penalty but if they are going to kill the poor and uneducated mules they should do the same with the rich and educated bosses, and same for the hospital workers who did sell the pills to make the yabaa.

I am quite certain that they know who the big fish are, it's just that nothing gets done about it.

Like with the illegal casinos around Bangkok, after the police chief was dismissed for not tackling the problem the new police chief came in and basically said "we now who are the police men running this places, so please move somewhere else or we may have to take action".

There are few medicines as effective as pseudoephedrine for nasal decongestion, ask any sinus sufferer...........

Have always managed to treat my problems homeopathically, but horses for courses I guess. I wouldn't touch any of this big pharma crap with a barge pole.

Just a guess for the people who needs ephedrine or similar: When I was younger and ephedrine was popular together with ecstasy I had some friends who bought the stuff in local chinese homeopatic shops back in Europe. I believe it was called mah juang or similar and you could buy the dried herb. I would guess if they have already banned the pills is probably not being sell but probably is worth a look for the nose sufferers. Just a though
