Emergency Passport

Featured Replies

Has anybody received an emergency US passport? I am just curious what it looks like (how many pages) and if there will be any questions using it. They say it is good for a year. Also interested in knowing if I need to bring anything beyond the DS82 form, ID and picture to the embassy. They say they issue these while you wait which concerns me a bit in terms of what I am getting since it takes 2-weeks to get a new passport.

I need to get one because I sent somebody down today to add pages in my passbook and they wouldn't do it because my info page has a tear in the seem where it is starting to come out. I need to travel before 2-weeks and don't have the available pages needed.

I am thinking about getting the emergency passport and also applying for a new one at the same time as I will be back in 2-weeks when the new when is ready before I travel again in a couple weeks after. If it has adequate pages and is recognized as a passport (by even novices) and is truly good for a year then I might just put off paying for a new one.

Thanks

Why don't you call ACS and ask them?

You can get a full fledged passport in less than 2 weeks. Last time I had one made at the consulate, they said 2 weeks, but I had it in 10 days.

Because I want real world advice and experience ... already called them and have in the past and often find what they tell you in person and what happens when you get there are two different stories. Such as my experience in adding pages and being told it was no problem only to find out my perfectly valid passport cannot have pages added because of the main page have a VERY TINY area on one edge where the page was not properly stitched when it was made. My guess is that somebody here might have encountered this problem before but ACS certainly didn't warn me about it but only said it couldn't be mutilated and it is not and have filled ever page traveling in numerous countries with the tiny tear. I also doubt they will share with me the right things to say in terms of how I can get a 1-year Emergency Passport instead of one just to cover my next trip.

An acquaintence of mine got an emergency U.S. passport. I was surprised at how much it looked just like a "real" U.S. passport. I forget how many pages it had -- not many. He had no questions from the airline when presenting the emergency passport to leave the country. Of course, the OP will have to carry his "old" passport as well, to show visa stamps, etc.

Bring the old passport, application form, photos (two I think) and money with you to the Embassy.

Thanks, sounds like it is straightforward process. Just seems like every time I deal with these guys nothing goes as planned ... in fact, I am certain I've never dealt with the US Embassy before without some kind of issue coming up.
