Evacuation Songkran

I have been living here in Thailand for a few yars now, not heaps of years, but enough to not want anything to do with Songkran this year. I live in Hua Hin and I was curious to know if anybody had any good suggestions? I do not wish to lock myself up in my own house for the 3 days, I wish to get away to maybe a quieter part of Thailand, maybe head to Cambodia, or check into a hotel, yet I am not quite decided. Any advise or opinions would be great, thanks Tom

Hua Hin is 3 days and Pattaya down to sattahip goes on for about 10...............take the train down to Penang..its overnight and costs 1,080 for a comfortable bottom bunk..good shopping, great curries and the beaches aint too bad.......you wont get wet either....leaves HH about 7pm

Second that one.

Have a couple of days in Georgetown, got a bit of night life going on and then a couple of days at Ferrenghi beach area, or whatever days at each of then depending what you want. Hotels vary from around 100 MR to as high as you want to go.A bit more expensive than Thailand but good for a break..

ta.....need to go to bangkok between 6th and 22nd...so wish to miss any holiday traffic as it is always a few days before and after also.

My experiences have been that the cr-p usually starts around the Wednesday, usually grubby urchins with containers of dirty water etc and then builds from there finally running out of steam around the monday or Tuesday. I enjoyed the first time twenty years ago when it was a case of pouring water on each others hands and sitting down talking to the family etc.

Nowadays I will go no further than say it's been done to death, both on the streets and here on Thaivisa.

I'm sure some people like Penang but I would say give it a miss. The beaches are sub-standard, it's over-priced and past it's prime. Not to mention crime is bad there (witnessed two purse snatching's there in a week). I was in Ao Nang for a few days over Song Kran last year and they didn't involve the farang...you could safely walk down the street without being doused. It kind of surprised me after being in Chiang Mai the year before. It might be different if you were in Krabi town. Anyway...nice relaxing place to visit, cheaper than Malaysia, and nice beaches.

I've heard Cambodia also celebrates with water but I don't have personal experience.

Now that you mention it I did spend one Songkran in the Krabi area and for a couple of days there was a bit of water being thrown but if you didn't want to join in it was no problem. At about 6.30/7.00pm it all stopped and everybody could go out for meal drink etc without worrying about getting soaked. Would be nice if it's still the same. I reckon it was about 6 or 7 years ago.

I am going to Phnom Penh from 10 April to 19 April to avoid songkran here in Chiang Mai. I am fed up of staying at home over the songkran period trying to avoid the dirty water. Heard that there is not a lot of water throwing in Phnom Penh as this us mainly confined to villages

Patong is a nightmare. That's why I have an evacuation flight out for April 10. I will be safe in China and will get some work done. I and some work associates consider Songkran a good time to get rid of business trips, do visa runs,or just go back to the homeland to visit family. It's not the Thais that p*ss me off in patong, but the farangs and everyone knows what I mean, nuff said.

In HH people usually only "play Songkran" on the first day. The second and third days are, almost, back to normal - just a few kids here and there splashing each other. I plan on heading back to HH for this year. One day of "playing water" is enough for me.

In Hua Hin it does not only go on for 1 day, it goes on for 3 days. If it was only 1 day I would not be wishing to leave lol. The streets at totally blocked, especially in the centre where cars for some reason try to get around which is imbossible, it is faster to walk and even then you will be walking at around 1MPH. I have photos as the first year I went out with my DSLR and it didn't get wet because everyone who saw it knew to stay away thank god.

I have been to Penang before, it was okay but that was for a visa run and I did not see a whole lot of the place to be honest. We were thinking of getting one of the casino buses from BKK around 6am to poipet in Cambodia, they are only about 100baht per person I think. But I am not sure how full they will be as it will be the 13th, the start of the water torture.

It would be easier to found some traqulity and peace somewhere In Thailand. When I was in Phang Gna (the village not the tourity section), I realized that nobody spoke English and I was pretty much the only farang there. Now I can speak Thai so it would be better, but I do not know how they celebrate down there.

The OP is lucky he does not live in Chiang Mai...it goes on for about 5 days here.hit-the-fan.gif

3 days is quite enough thanks lol. I read in the other Songkran related thread about Ban Amphur, would that be a good choice? I have never been to Cambodia and I am not too sure about the availability of the casino buses to Poipet, so it would be easier and less hassel to stay within Thailand, but somewhere somewhat, quiet lol.

Ban Amphur is just South of Pattaya. Not really much there. A few resorts, but the beach is just so so IMHO.

From Hua Hin, how about Ban Kruit? It's a really small place. A few resorts only and the beach is fantastic. Not sure if it will be crowded with vacationers from BKK or not? Same with Bang Saphan. I liked that area a lot also.
