Ministerial Action Urged Over Vice TV Message 'Thailand Is The World's Brothel'

A poster said women do not come to Thailand for the brothels ???.........ha ha, go to the boys town areas and watch the ladies go in to choose the guys, as near as many as the men. The boys go with most and look forward to the ladies for a change. After all it's business-wages-sex. So few lesbians are talked about, and they flock into the girl go go places. Yes there is a "bit of the other for all comers. That's Pattaya for starters.

A poster also said if the brothels were not in Pattaya all that would be left would be High priced hotels and a beach. WRONG it would die in a month. and regarding a beach---are you Joking---there isn't a decent beach there, people do NOT come to Pattaya for the beach (they use it-yes cause it's there) but to fly from Europe or where ever traveling thousands of miles, at great expense for the sand and sea, oh NO. if you want white sand and blue sea, Pattaya is a NO NO. A top brothel YES

Cheap Russians seem to come for the beach.

Well there aren't any official statistics on that, but it seems clear that it is true. 40% of tourists now are female (higher percent than China or India). Just look around, go to Patpong or lower Suhkumvit and you see a bunch of half empty bars, and then go to Khao San Road or any of the various mega malls and there are huge teeming crowds of people. Demographic of tourists have changed, the single western male headed to gogo bars are a small minority. More families and children come than ever before, huge numbers of young people and couples, Russians are now the largest 'farang' group, and Asians now make up 2/3rds of tourists.

Well, as I said, definitive stats would be better, and I don't argue entirely with what you say. However, a more interesting stat might be, what percentage of all the visitors don't avail themselves in any way of a sexual service during their visit. Ranging from basic massage shops to golf caddies, the potential is enormous.

Particularly as you say about Asians being a very fast increasing market, how many Korean or Japanese golfers don't get a bit of slap and tickle when they are here? One market is replacing another. Whilst you are wondering why Nana is quiet, the jap and korean hostess bars may well be heaving.

Thankfully I"m part of the 10% who are not here for the girls.I have never been to Pattaya and don"t want to go either,I don"t care if Thailand is called Amazing or Brothel it will do for me.

The best thing about Pattaya is that it keeps all the farang riff-raff away from Chiang Mai!

No brothels in Chiang Mai ? 555

Well Pattaya is one of if not the largest red light district on earth. While other Asian countries have just as much if not more prostitution, they don't usually allow foreigners while Pattaya is aimed at them

Angeles City too is aimed solely at foreigners and used to be the second biggest brothel in the world to Pattaya's third but Pattaya has exploded since then and I don't know how Angeles is these days.

Biggest was Taipei but probably not solely a foreigner haunt.

If you had done any research whatsoever, you would know that last year alone 3 million people came to Thailand for medical treatment. If you think they came here for, as you put it ' a sexual service - when ill, then by Buddha you are a not well.

What has 3mn medical tourists got to do with anything? If you can prove that NONE of them went for a back rub across from Brumrungrad, I might take you at face value. It isn't as though all people expressly get off an aeroplane with sex tourist on the entry card.

You can't prove how many visitors did or didn't engage in paid sexual services, although all I can say is that an awful lot do, and the range of how they engage in this is very broad, but nonetheless contributes to the perception of Thailand. I suppose you haven't ever been propositioned on a golf course, and ironically, a good friend of mine married his nurse, but paid up front the first few times.

It's impossible to ever know what percent do, but I don't think it's very high. For Asians, Thailand is nothing special in that regard. Prostitution is common and easy to get in every Asian country. Cheaper here than at home for the Japanese, and they do have their own little red light district in Bangkok in Soi Thaniya, but it never looks very crowded there when I walk through. For Koreans there doesn't appear much and they would have better looking women that speak their own language for low prices at home. For Chinese the same, except it's more expensive here than at home. It's really only special for white guys, as it's difficult, expensive, low quality, and potentially dangerous in many of our home countries.

Yeah , its hard to hear the truth .... compare with Thailand , some red districts in other countries looks like convents . I wonder if all massage parlors, gogo bars,escort service etc ...would close there would be a huge drop in tourism revenue.

You can't expect the brothel owners (politician's & their families, military officers, police generals etc) to give up their tidy earner can you?

Pattaya and the likes of Nana & Cowboy are mere window dressing on the greater business that is carried on throughout the kingdom, largely unknown and unnoticed by foreigners.

The greatest percentage of the sex trade is Thai on Thai.

Pattaya without the sex business would be merely a beach and a few high priced hotels.

Thailand HUB of SEX.

How true, I was always led to believe that the sex trade in Thailand is 85% Thai Men, 10% other Asians and the rest 'The Farangs.' Go to any of the large "Thai" massage parlors in Bangkok on any evening (five 'used' to be owned by a well known celb) and you will find 400 girls sitting in the goldfish bowel all looking for at least three customers per shift, that's a lot of Thai men. In reality 'Farangs' are only a small part of the problem, which is why those in power could not care less what happens to them. When the parlor owner tell you that as a 'Farang' the price goes up threefold that should tell you something.

Other finding it cheaper in Korea (ever been to a room salon in Seoul and tried to get a woman out of the place for less than 500 USD), or the Japanese not having more areas than just Thaniya (just go to Sriracha), or that it is more expensive in China than here, your post is extremely informative.

Thailand - hub of storms in teacups.

Hands up everybody reading this who would never have heard of this "incident" if people weren't making noise about it.

That's what I thought. if the people calling for "Ministerial action" hadn't kicked up a shitstorm, FAR fewer people would have ever heard, or paid attention to this "world's brothel" comment.

True, but it's the world's largest low quality brothel.If there is a country in the world where most women are totally unskilled and uninteresd in sex, this is Thailand.It's easy to have sex in Thailand, but difficult to have good sex.It's easy to get into a relationship in Thailand, but difficult to get into a good ,meaningful,adult relationship.Any guy having experience with ' latina' will agree with me...

Absolutely agree.

Absolutely. Latinas and Thais are worlds apart.... except for their moods!

I didn't say it was cheaper in Korea than here, I said it was low priced. There are loads of Korean venues for Korean men that are low priced. And China is lower priced and much better quality than what you will find here, and it is everywhere. And they'd all speak the same language in these places.

Still doesn't mean that they don't partake when they come over here, and in my opinion, a lot do.

Well if Thailand has created this reputation for itself, what are they going to do about it? Are they just going to try and crucify someone for speaking the truth and sook or are they going to get serious on prostitution and clean up thier mess. Oh and just a tip, a media release saying that all prostitution has been totally stamped out will not wash with the world. Start with Pattaya and put it all behind closed doors and not so in your face on every street corner might help.

It's impossible to ever know what percent do, but I don't think it's very high.

You're dreaming. Most countries see pretty close to 50/50 male to female ratio on inbound tourists.

Therefore, for Thailand (and Cambodia, Phillipines etc)

A = # of female tourists

B = # of male tourists

B - A = # of sex tourists

plus add a fair percentage more to accommodate the fact that the male of a couple will often get a quickie while the wife is off shopping, not to mention the fact that some women come here for sex too.

=================

Separate topic - perception is much more important than reality anywhere.

Take a poll of regular international travellers from whatever mix of countries you like, say at the busiest airports in Europe and America. Ask the question:

"Which country do you think is the #1 destination for sex tourism?"

Do you doubt Thailand would be at the top? I think so, and I think it's total vote would equal the next half-dozen choices combined.

Maybe it's better if we continue to let the hi-so's kid themselves about what the world thinks of Thailand, or they might actually try to change the situation. In reality as long as everyone shuts up about it in the media they can continue pretending it's not an issue and ignore it.

I really hate to think the measure Thailand would have to take over say twenty years to turn that perception around. And I'm not talking about spending money on PR and advertising. . .

No, they don't, not in Asia at least. I've explained this before in another thread and posted the stats on tourism in China and India as well, Thailand has a HIGHER percentage of female tourists than either of these countries. 40% of tourists to Thailand are female. That is a normal percent, because men travel more than women do.

A = # of female tourists

B = # of male tourists

B - A = # of sex tourists

Sorry but that's completely ridiculous. Men just travel more than women do.

The greatest percentage of the sex trade is Thai on Thai.

Bingo! Lots of people don't realize this . . . it's got to be in the region of 10% foreign oriented places such as Nana, Cowboy, Pattaya etc against 90% Thai on Thai that most foreigners never see or are even aware of.

Axis prostitution is illegal in Thailand, Such places thrive only by paying off local police, apparently, Which Means every city or county has a brothel in Thailand All which (quite a lot) has corruption That Such endorses slavery and disgrace. Nathee Theerarojanapong (a gay rights defender) Should know these. Also he should know That not speaking the truth is a bad habbit and things will not change for the good and benefit of Thailand. But he forgets the power of new media programs. Where the face is determined that Thailand has in the world. It is the Thai, which determine the face of Thailand. But that is not working in the information.

Here are tourism arrivals by gender. For the first part of last year, 39.9% of tourist arrivals to Thailand were female. Among Europeans, that percent was 43%.

http://www.tourism.g.../Sex-Travel.pdf

Note that 'sex-travel' there refers to gender of arrivals, nothing more

China

http://www.cnto.org/...alsByAgeSex.asp

In China 35.7% of arrivals were female

Here are statistics for the UK.

http://www.visitbrit...data/index.aspx

43% of tourist to the UK are female. The percent is higher than Thailand, but not significantly. A 50/50 gender ratio among tourists is not normal. Men travel more. Especially to a far off destination.

Some men certainly are going for sex. But they are vastly outnumbered by the millions who are not. The bars would be heaving with customers instead of being half empty and there wouldn't be so many shutting down or doing poorly otherwise.

In the face of strong competition from the Philippines, India, Russia and many South American states. Thailand should be proud to get the top ratings.

If it's all prostitution and not just sex tourism I think India thrashes Thailand into submission in this competition. Russia, America and China wallop it on sheer numbers. I'd bet many African and Middle Eastern countries would dominate it with local on local. Then of course there's South London.
