My employer-to-be says they have the paperwork I need to get my Non-Immigrant B - apparently just one document.

I need to arrange a visa run from Phuket to Penang, total cost to me approx 7000 Baht and 2 days, so I want to make sure that I don't get rejected in Penang.

Will my employers document (plus photos and copy of passport, presumably) be enough?

edit: Another question - the stamp on my Tourist Visa says the 2nd of April. If I cross the border into Malaysia on the morning on the 2nd of April, is this OK or will I get 1 day's overstay? Thanks.

I can not imagine one document getting a non immigrant B visa in Malaysia but yes you can depart on the 2nd if that is the date on your permitted to stay stamp.

(1) Foreigners who wish to work in Thailand must provide the following documents:

- Passport or travel document with validity of not less than 6 months.

- Completed visa application form.

- Recent passport-sized photograph (4 x 6 cm) of the applicant taken within the past 6 months.

- Evidence of adequate finance (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family).

- Letter of approval from the Ministry of Labour. To obtain this letter, the applicant’s prospective employer in Thailand is required to submit Form WP3 at the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour Tel. 02-2452745, or at the Provincial Employment Office in his or her respective province. More information is available at www.doe.go.th/workpermit/index.html

- Copy of Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Labour and alien income tax or Por Ngor Dor 91 (only in the case where applicant has previously worked in Thailand).

- Corporate documents of hiring company in Thailand such as:

1) business registration and business license

2) list of shareholders

3) company profile

4) details of business operation

5) list of foreign workers stating names, nationalities and positions

6) map indicating location of the company

7) balance sheet, statement of Income Tax and Business Tax (Por Ngor Dor 50 and Por Ngor Dor 30 of the latest year)

8) value-added tax registration (Por Por 20)

- Document indicating the number of foreign tourists (for tourism business only), or document indicating export transactions issued by banks (for export business only).

N.B.

- An alien who receives a Non-Immigrant visa can work in Thailand once he or she is being granted a work permit. An alien in violation of the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979) concerning taking up employment without work permit or the Royal Decree B.E. 2522 (1979) concerning holding employment in certain restricted occupations and professions shall be prosecuted and imprisoned or fined, or shall face both penalties.

- It is recommended that the applicant should apply for visa at the Thai Embassy/ Consulate in the country where he/she has the residence

When I went years ago, the list above was correct, the big one being the receipt from the Ministry of Labour to say you have applied for a WP.

If it is literally 1 document then you will not get a Non-B

Normally the employer needs to supply as meantioned a receipt that you have applied for a work permit plus several other documents including maps to the business, capital, business licence and many more.

I would speak with your employer first because this is just NOT possible. You will be wasting your time and money.

Where did you come up with the total cost being 7000 baht? A breakdown might help us reccomend you better.

Also Penang has recently (past 6 months) been the worst place to go for visas. The easiest being Suvhannaket in Lao, second being Vienttiene in Laos, third being Phnom Phenh Cambodia.

The 7000 is:

2000 Baht for the Visa

4500 Baht for a "everything included" bus trip from Phuket to Penang and back, including food and accomodation

500 Baht to spend while I'm there (perhaps I shouldn't have included that in the 7000 Baht).

My employer is a big hotel in Phuket (200+ rooms, international chain). I'm fairly sure that the documentation they have for me is the Ministry of Labour receipt/letter. I need to go and collect it, unfortunately it's some distance away.

The only reason I want to go to Penang is to save money.

Well if it is ONLY the receipt for WP then again you cannot. Please read again what I said you must have. Actually lopburi3 already posted exactly what you need so 1 document won't cut it. Maybe 1 folder of documents.

You need an inch of documents as already stated, and if you are a "Resort or Management Consultant" your income must be 50,000 Bhat per month minimum and stated on all documents as such.

I'm teaching English. There are a couple of other farangs working there (like the GM), who I'm pretty sure are there legally. I will know exactly what document(s) they have produced for me on Friday.

The list and link that lopburi3 kindly produced gives a long list of documents that looks intimidating, but perhaps it's not so bad. Passport, application, photos and proof of finance I provide myself. I have the letter of approval, apparently. So all that I seem to be lacking are the "Corporate documents of hiring company in Thailand". It only says "such as", so it would appear that they don't necessarily need ALL the documents in that list. Maybe I'm missing something obvious :)

I would rather go to Vientiene, but my last trip came to about 11,000 Baht in total, so I wouldn't mind saving a bit of money. If Penang are being really strict and denying visas on a whim, maybe I'll have to spend some extra cash.

You need the list of documents provided by Lopburi; plus for Penang you must have the Letter of Approval signed by your local Head of Labour, as the WP3 receipt alone there is not enough.

However, other than the Letter of Approval requirement, Penang is ok for the Single Entry 90 Day Non Immigrant Type 'B' Visa, but currently can however be very difficult for the One Year Multiple Entry Type 'B'.

If you have any doubt, phone them - they actually answer the phone at Penang and will advise you on your application..

Thank you digital, that is some very helpful advice. I will ensure that I have the Letter of Approval before I go on any trip to Penang.
