Up until recently my stay in Thailand was an extension to a non O based on marriage. This was accessed on income from UK property.

I have a job which I started last year under the old non O extension. The extension expired this week and I wanted to renew the extension rather than rely on a visa linked to the job. However, due to change in circumstances I could not renew my extension as my UK income has ended and the salary is below 40,000.

I have therefore now received a visa linked to the job. However, I am planning to leave the job within the next three months.

Before I do so I would like to move back to the marriage based extension of stay. To do this I am planning to move 400,000 baht into a Thai bank account so that in 2 months I can apply for a new marriage extension of stay accessed on these savings.

Another possible option is to apply for a new Non O marriage visa when I am back in the UK in April.

Is there a process I need to follow to move from one visa to another?

The day you quit your job you go to labour and immigration to cancel your work permit and permission to stay. For that you need a letter from your employer clearly stating that your job has been terminated on that day.

When you cancel your permission to stay for no longer working, you apply for an extension of stay based on marriage, together with all the required evidence and your wife. So prepare all the docuemtns for teh extension based on marriage in advance. If neeed be you can get an extension of 60 days based on your wife first with minimal documents, before you apply fro a 1 year extension of stay with all documents and interview of wife.

Thank you. That's helpful.

What would happen if I went to the Thai Embassy in London in April and applied for a new non-O while the present teacher visa is still valid?

If you do not have a re-entry permit the extension of stay would automatically become invalid the moment you leave the country. If you do have a re-entry permit, they would simply cancel your permission to stay and give you a new visa.

Your work permit would remain valid, and you only cancel your WP when you no longer are employed.

You are on an Extension of Permission to Stay (the entry stamp in your passport has been extended first on the basis of marriage and now on the basis of employment - your original visa is long expired).

If you leave Thailand without a Re-entry Permit then your current extension will end the moment you are stamped out of Thailand; in this case you have no visa when you are in the UK and can apply for a new one as you wish/are qualified.
