Is anyone interested in samba/rumba/ latin style drumming? Just an idea for our personal entertainment and something different to enjoy. I'm not really an organizer or leader just interested in participating if we could get a little group of rhythmically inclined individuals together. Search Youtube for 'Samba Squad' to get an idea of what I have in mind.

Yes, interested and still learning it since I went to Cuba roughly 20 years ago and got inspired.

I guess the samba squad thing is a bit different from what I am doing, as I am mainly interested in adpating techiques to the drumset in a jazz / fusion setting.

Bringing this music from the other side of the planet to Thailand should definitely be interesting.

Had some very good impromptu Latin style drumming/percussion at Pratu Thapae the other night. By the time I left there was about 10 musicians, both Thai and farang, working up a good rhythmic groove. There was a good crowd. Very enjoyable.

I think that would be the local Thai rhythm section

Yes ok you get the idea. I'm not experienced just enthusiastic. As to 'gear' pretty much anything percussive. There's lots of Thai style percussion instruments out there. I'm thinking of a regular get together to work up ideas. Venue? A 'hit and run' style might be fun, just show up anywhere at anytime to amuse and entertain. Loi Khro, walking street, shopping malls, airport, special events. How about Guerrumba Group, haha.

I am inexperienced either but like the idea and enthusiast. should be able to hit up some rhythm with few practices.

The percussion group was at Pratu Thapae again last night. The ensemble is now up to about 16 people; Thai and farang, men and women. It's really quite enjoyable to listen to. There was even a guy playing the Didgeridoo. I could see how this could catch on.

Ok, some early interest. We could just have a get together to see what ideas come up. Suggestions?

Sticklee kickstart it. I think we need at least some sort of safehouse (practice venue) and a ensemble leader who is willing to organize things.

I am currently still in BKK should be arriving in CNX either before songkran or after.

elektrified any idea where do they come from ? maybe it be a good idea to drum with them and have a sub group of us within the TV group.

I don't know where they come from but they are very much open to new 'members' sitting in and joining them. I saw them invite enthusiastic onlookers to sit in and they provided extra drums, etc. There is one Thai girl who plays a number of instruments including 2 empty paint buckets and a tambourine and she is very good. Some of the farangs look like they may hang out at the reggae area but there are even a couple of older men farangs playing instruments as well.

Ok I'll give it a push and see what happens. I suggest a comfortable outdoor meet for the first get together. How about Nong Buak Park, that's at the south west inside corner of the moat, next Saturday Apr. 7 10 am.. We can meet, get some ideas flowing, instrumentation etc. and go from there.
