Aerosmith

We're going to need a bigger budget - for concert tickets - with Lady Gaga, Aerosmith, Elton John and more heading our way

BANGKOK: -- Lady Gaga and Aerosmith alone ought to make up for all those cancelled concerts last year, and Elton John looks likely to perform in Thailand too. Coldplay is a possibility. Bangkok seems to have hit the big-name jackpot for 2012.

Gaga and Aerosmith will be onstage in town this year along with top-ranked British acts Suede and Noel Gallagher, formerly of Oasis and now leading the High Flying Birds. The world's favourite Swedish pop band, the Cardigans, is also coming, and so is sensational Canadian jazz crooner Diana Krall.

"We are very excited with the line-up we've confirmed for 2012 and what will be confirmed soon for the remainder of the year," says Neil Thompson, deputy managing director of BEC Tero Entertainment, which has Earth, Wind & Fire booked for Monday and Lady Gaga in May.

You might have heard of Lady Gaga: She's currently the planet's biggest music star.

"It's a real coup that we managed to get her to perform in Bangkok as part of her global tour," Thompson says. "This will be the biggest show this country has seen since Michael Jackson."

BEC-Tero is in talks with Sir Elton, punk trio Green Day, 1990s chart-toppers the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Jason Mraz. And a new date will be announced soon for David Foster & Friends, another of the shows washed out by last year's flooding.

Then there's "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" set for June to coincide with the release of the 3D version of James Cameron's movie, all part of the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

BEC-Tero also promises "the most visually stunning Disney on Ice show yet", with more than 50 cartoon characters donning skates, and later this year Les Ballets Trocadero de Monte Carlo. Next year we'll get to see the mega-musical "The Phantom of the Opera" onstage.

Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds on September 25, Diana Krall in November and Aerosmith in December are all coming courtesy of Rock N' Rolla, the promotional firm founded by Santi "Freddy" Samithisawad.

Its 2012 series of concerts begins on August 4 with "Sonic Attack 2", a festival that Freddy wants to prove is about more than just metal music. "For its second year the theme will be alternative rock, with Suede as the headliners and including the Cardigans."

Meanwhile there'll be more on offer from Click-VR One radio, which organised the Olivia Newton-John concert at Bitec in Bang Na this month. Managing director Wassanaphong Vichaiya is keen on "retro" acts.

"We don't want to be a serious rival to the bigger promoters, forcing down ticket prices," he says. "We just want fans of an older generation to relive the good old days. Olivia was aimed at people 40 to 60 years old."

Click-VR One - which runs 102.5 Get FM, where foreign music gets heavy rotation, and 101 FM for the older crowd - plans to put three or four more foreign artists on Bangkok stages this year and host a string of Thai shows and a music festival as well.

As for Coldplay, the British hitmakers who routinely sell out stadiums are the rumoured headliners for the second Silverlake Music Festival, which is expected to take place following the rainy season at the Silverlake Vineyard in Pattaya.

New on the promotion scene but solidly financed, Silverlake Entertainment is pondering involvement in sports events too and perhaps the Thai Premier League.

Managing director Siripol "Bob" Samithisawad, who also oversees JSS Production, doesn't want to say which music acts the firm is negotiating with for the Silverlake Festival.

THE LIST SO FAR

Monday - Earth, Wind & Fire at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani

Thursday - LMFAO and Lil Jon at the Together Festival at Bitec in Bang Na

April 24 - Avenged Sevenfold at the Impact Arena Thunder Dome

May 8 - Dream Theatre at the Thunder Dome

May 25 - Lady Gaga at Rajamangala Stadium in Hua Mark

August 4 - Sonic Attack 2 festival with Suede and the Cardigans

September 25 - Noel Gallagher and High Flying Birds

Late 2012 - Diana Krall, Aerosmith, David Foster & Friends, Green Day, Jason Mraz, Elton John and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Well if this happens, let's hope it turns out better than the dismal embarrassment that was the last big line up in Bangkok, including Placebo, Snow Patrol, Greenday and several others, when everyone was herded into 'cattle pens' out in the middle of nowhere on some derelict industrial park, where a huge podium had been constructed for all the Pu Yai to sit and obscure the view, sponsored by a Thai Whiskey company, 100 Lousy Pipers was the only drink on sale, no other alcohol allowed.

It was so appalling a group of what looked like Thai Uni students apologised to us for their awful government! It was the present incumbent's brother at the time.

Going to Impact Arena - Muang Thong Thani in the pouring rain the first week in August 2006 to see the Black Eyed Peas was an unforgettable 3 1/2 hour traffic experience. Bitec should be equally thrilling for those who take a taxi from Bangkok but better than Impact Arena.

They might come depending if there is no Coup, Airport siezure, flood, political unrest, travel warnings, protests etc.

And if they do I will bet my arse I won't be able to afford it.

How odd that the national government would be blamed for an activity that comes under municipal or provincial control. In respect to this show, you do realize that bangkok has its own government. The head is called the Governor. Any entertainment activity staged in Bangkok comes under the local Bangkok administration's responsibility.

i was at that festival (unlike Green Day) and it was excellent !!! ian brown, maximo park, franz ferdinand and oasis on the 1st day and snow patrol and placebo (who were brilliant) on the second day !!

the only complaint i could have for a super weekend was stereophonics cancelling ... but there wasn't much the organisers could do about that !!

and a quick motorbike taxi ride to the nearest 7/11 meant we had as much beer as we needed !!!

How long have you been posting on this forum? You are either incredibly naive or being disingenuous. Since when are any and all administrative bodies, particularly in Bangkok, not acting in concert with the acquiecense of, the government of the day?

Aerosmith, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Noel Gallagher. The perfect soundtrack for a critical mass of dull, middle-aged white men indulging themselves in a second youth of drinking and whoring to stave off a gnawing sense of failure and mortality. Welcome to Bangkok.

Not even close. Now if you mentioned Boston, Journey and The Eagles and got rid of Gallagher and the Peppers you would be much closer to the mark. Maybe add the Stones to that list and any remaining members of The Grateful Dead as well.

20111

Man you guys must have a very low self esteem. is the glass always half empty? I was thinking of taking my 13 year old son to see the Chilli Peppers as he really likes them as do many of his friends. Man you just have to go to Soi Cowboy or Nana or Pattaya to see what you described. Such negativity.

I don't like Lady Gaga's music or appearance one bit, but seeing as she won 3 Grammy awards this year, and last year was rated 4th on the top moneymaking list, your comment about a fading star is, to quote your eloquent words "a load of borrocks".

You may also failed to have noticed that it is the older groups and performers who fill stadiums around the world because, whatever their ages, they can still entertain thousands at a concert.. Springsteen is 62, but he is still the performer I most want to see here; if he came to Bangkok would you also say he is at the end of the Gravy Train? We didn't stop going to see Aretha, Sinatra, Muddy Waters, Count Basie etc when they aged.

It is possibly only amongst TV expats that such promising news about possible concerts could be treated so miserably.

Lady Gaga was actually in Bangkok already 2-3 weeks ago. My daughter wanted to go but there were no tickets, the concert was sold out the day the ticket sale opened. Not cheap either, 1,000-5,000 baht/ticket IIRC.

That s not true, two weeks ago ( March 17) tickets sale for the May 25 concert started March. Range :1500-7000 thb, not sold out yet.

The last station on the Skytrain, Bearing, is very close to BITEC.

Don't mention the Stones! We went to Impact Arena, best seats all paid for........but the Stones cancelled that day and many of us didn't know. Very disappointed. At least they refunded our money (doesn't always happen here)
