Well it ain’t

My source offered me many variables

I thought that I would share my findings.

Option 1

I DID THIS’ FOR’ GOOD REASONS เพราะว่า prɔ́-wâa ‘because’ or เนื่องจาก ‘due too’

Option 2

I WILL WORK ‘FOR’ 200 DOLLAR ในราคา nai-raa-kaa –‘at price’

Option 3

I WILL WORK ‘FOR’ ONE HOUR เป็นเวลา bpen-wee-laa-‘be time’

Option 4

I AM HEADING’ FOR’ HOME ที่ tîi ‘at place’

Option 5

I AM DOING THIS ‘FOR’ YOU เพื่อ pʉ̂ʉa- ‘ the purpose of’ or สำหรับ sǎm-ràp ‘because of’

Option 6

THIS IS ‘FOR’ YOU ให้กับ hâi-gàp ‘the sake of’ or แก่ gɛ̀ɛ or ให้แก่ hâi-gɛ̀ɛ or แด่ dɛ̀ɛ

Option 7

‘FOR’ THE PEOPLE เห็นด้วยกับ hěn-dûuai-gàp ‘in favour of’

Option 8

WE WILL EXCHANGE THIS’ FOR’ THAT แทน tɛɛn ‘in place of’

Option 9

THIS WE DO ‘FOR ‘OUR FALLEN COMRADES ในฐานะของ nai-tǎa-ná-kɔ̌ɔng –‘in honour of’

Option 10

I WILL GIVE YOU TWO ‘FOR’ ONE ต่อ dtɔ̀ɔ - ‘per’

Just as well English is a bit more flexible

If not then Elvis would have sang:

-It’s one in favour of the money

-two in favour of the show

-three to get ready---------etc.-

It just don’t ring right.

Maybe ส่วน is another option.

ส่วน

  • [CONJ] as for; for S.สำหรับ Ex. เพื่อนๆ ออกไปทานข้าวกันหมดแล้ว ส่วนผมยังต้องสะสางให้เสร็จ

I,m struggling with this!

My understanding of ส่วน is that it mean A SHARE

Perhaps you could enlighten me

Thanks

Yes, ส่วน can mean a share, a part a portion but I think (JMO) it is interchangeable with สำหรับ. I can't translate the dictionary example because สะสางให้เสร็จ is throwing me off. I don't know how to translate that to make sense in the example, so I have another example.

คุณอ่าน Emily Dickenson ส่วนผมอ่าน Robert Frosts...เรามันต่างกันมาก

You read Emily, for me (or on my part or as for me) I read Frost we are very different.

Another example:

ผมจะแต่งงานกับพี่สาวคุณ ส่วนคุณ...ก็จะเป็นนางบำเรอของผม

I will marry your sister. As for you, you will be my concubine.

Thanks for your response to my request.

I still do not see that the single word ‘FOR’ can be replaced with the Thai word ส่วน

In the examples that I quoted in my post the single word ‘FOR ‘ could be replaced with a more definitive phrase in English –which then had a direct translation into Thai.

In your examples I have to replace’ AS FOR’ .I cannot just replace ‘FOR’

‘AS FOR’ in English of course means ‘With respect to’ or simply ‘about'.

This got me thinking. I always though Pheu Thai meant For Thais. However, เพื่อ (pheu) is translated as 'for the purpose of'. For The Purpose of Thais doesn't have quite the same ring to it as the name for a political party.

I think that there is an interesting distinction between the words เพื่อ (pheu);สำหรับ sǎm-ràp and เพราะว่า prɔ́-wâa.

As I see it เพื่อ (pheu) means 'in the cause of ' ie noble

เพราะว่า prɔ́-wâa. -' by reason of' i.e. simple justification

;สำหรับ sǎm-ràp -on account of -i.e. obligation

Perhaps the more experienced contributors could confirm my analysis or suggest more precise defintions

There's a bunch of explanations of Peua here: http://www.thai2english.com/dictionary/1379816.html

My Thai is very rusty but if I'm not mistaken when spoken with a low tone in means 'Just in case'.

In the instance of 'Hai' (ให้) I think it depends where it is in the sentence eg: 'Hai khun tham hai' or...I will allow (let) you do it for me. Substitute Tham for other actions. That's a very common contruction and something you hear everyday.
