I watched a movie with my (Thai-Chinese) girlfriend a couple of nights ago. It was called WANTED, and it stars Angelina Jolie.

In one scene, Angelina stepped out of a kind of bathtub. She was NAKED.

But while I was looking at Angelina's derriere, my girlfriend was looking at her "hathaew".

The word "hathaew" means FIVE ROWS in the way that "songthaew" means TWO ROWS.

A "hathaew" is a kind of tattoo. Angelina had it done here in Thailand. It covers her left shoulder blade.

What's the significance of a hathaew? Why do Thai people have it?

When Thai men go to prison, they often get themselves covered in certain kinds of tattoos. They do this in order that they can't be stabbed. Is a hathaew "unstabbable"? If not, what kind of tattoo is unstabbable? And could such a tattoo be done by a normal tattoo artist, or would it need to be done by a monk?

soon i will be sitting with my issan lao father in law, and will discuss all his temple tattoos.

i hope angelina jolie pops up naked on tv, and whilst he and i are both looking at her bum, we will discuss sak yant and all that stuff.

not just the criminal underworld have protection tattoos, check the monks out sometime, soldiers, bib, the local samlor driver etc

never worked out why the father in law had the words "love and hate" tattooed on his nuckles, maybe he got drunk in pattaya once

What I've been noticing is there's a bit of Chinese blood in a great many Thais. My wife's grandfather was from China. Not significant.
