GUADALAJARA, JALISCO (BNO NEWS) -- A large cargo truck carrying several workers crashed in western Mexico on Thursday, killing at least fourteen people and injuring several others, local authorities said on late Friday.

The three-ton heavy cargo truck crashed on a highway in the municipality of Ahualulco de Mercado in Jalisco Valley region of Jalisco state. Alhy Daniel Nuñez Quiros, the Mexican Red Cross coordinator in Guadalajara, the state capital, said there were 23 sugarcane workers on board the truck at the time of the accident.

The cause of the accident, in which the truck flipped over before crashing into a tree, was not immediately known. Quiros said eleven workers died at the scene, while emergency teams rushed several others to nearby hospitals. Three of the victims later succumbed to their wounds, raising the death toll to fourteen.

Two of the surviving nine workers were reported to be in a critical condition at National Mexican Social Security's Western Medical Center in Guadalajara, where they were brought to by a state Civil Protection helicopter.
