Aranyapathet To Poipet Border Crossing

i'm hearing about this 'taxi mafia' that operates on the cambodian side of the border... basically, if you're crossing on foot, you may be left with no choice but to use them, unless you know what bus to get on. and then even with the buses, it sounds like that's a racket as well.

we are not travelling on to siem reap or phnom penh. my girlfriend and i were planning a two night stay in poipet in one of the major casinos located right near the border.

can anyone confirm or deny the existence of this 'taxi mafia'?

can anyone advise as to how much a taxi ride should be to the casinos from the border? do you find a taxi or tuk tuk and just haggle with them?

is there a better way to get to the casinos? i don't want to fall victim to one of these scams and end up paying $25 or some ridiculous amount for a taxi ride of just a few kilometers. (at least that's about all it is from what i can glean out of the bits and pieces that i've read).

thanks.

From the border to the casino it's probably a 200 meters walk, if that's too much for you, maybe making a small investment in one of those foldable wheelchairs might prove to be a winner thumbsup.gif

All the taxi mafia stuff is relevant to people wanting to go on to places like Siem Reap. Going just to the casinos and you are unlikely to encounter them as the problems begin at the traffic circle after the casino strip.

thanks to all of you who responded to my request regarding transport to the casinos. having done a bit more research, i've discovered that the casinos are located only a few hundred meters from the border crossing. the taxi scams are at least one thing we won't have to worry about in this particular case. :)

Coming from Thai immigration going to Cambodia is about 500 meters of nothing much however if you turn left 100 meters after Thai immigration there is more stuff going on.

After 8 is when it comes alive-ish with some club bars getting going around 11.

First on the right is an expensive resto and bar, forgot the name begins with A which is pretty good.

Keep going and you find the Genting Crown Casino.

Turn right at GCC and there is the only decent coffee shop and a very good Thai massage place. Good for a scrub then oil massage as the town is dirty and dusty.

2nd right from GCC a tiny hole in the wall burger and pizza joint. Good pizzas and next to an Internet Cafe. Note the alley after Bsian doesn't count as the 2nd right. There is a gym/fitness Centre down there if that takes your fancy.

Turn left at GCC Cambodian disco, down a darkish lane tho

Keep straight at GCC about 1km Thai disco - expensive for tins of Heineken and 200 baht for a lady tequila.

Opposite Genting Bsian and Diver bar possibly the best 2 sit and watch the world bars in the area. Cambodian but they speak very good Thai.
