Gunfire on Pattaya Beach as drunken reveller celebrates Songkran

PATTAYA:--As thousands celebrated the Songkran Festival on Pattaya Beach throughout Thursday, the sound of gunfire rang-out as one drunken reveller took things a little too far by shooting multiple times into the air.

Police were called to the front of Soi Pattayaland 2 at the south-end of Pattaya Beach early on Thursday afternoon and were confronted by Khun Griengsuk aged 49 who was carrying a firearm and around him were four empty bullet casings. He surrendered the weapon without incident and was also able to produce a valid gun licence. At Pattaya Police Station he claimed he had no intention of hurting anyone and admitted to getting a little carried-away with the Songkran festivities.

No intention of hurting anyone? I'm no expert on firearms, and have no wish to be . . . but doesn't any projectile once launched have to come down somewhere?

Yep, and it comes down with the same velocity as it went up with.

To answer the question of sentence ...

"Section 376 : Whoever, unnecessarily fires a gun in a town, village or an other place where there is conglomeration of people, shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding ten days or fined not exceeding five hundred Baht, or both."

And confiscation of the weapon is normal.

I used to be co-owner of a bar on Decatur St. In the New Orleans French Quarter. This street is adjacent to, and parallel with Mississippi River. Directly across the river from my bar are the Fischer Housing Projects; now largely demolished to terrible crime. The A/C broke in the restaurant and I went with the repair guy to the roof to check out the compressor. There were hundreds and hundreds of spent bullets all over the roof, bullets, not shells. The repair guy said that every building in the area had the same thing, and the bullets were fired into the air from the projects across the river. What about all the bullets that hit the streets rather than the roofs? DANGEROUS stuff

Muzzle velocity of a 9mm - about 1200 ft p/sec.

Terminal velocity of a 9mm bullet about 150 ft p/sec

A 7.5 gram 9mm bullet falling (not on a ballistic trajectory) at 150 ft p/sec does not have sufficient kinetic energy to break skin let alone kill you.

The same 9mm fired on an optimal trajectory may travel some distance and still be lethal, but it is not "falling" in the normal context of the word and is not behaving as would a bullet fired directly up.

1200 ft p/sec vs 150 ft p/sec....That's the same to you? Must have been a very elementary physics lesson you took.

When I see pictures of celebratory gunfire, most guns are discharged at an 80 to 45 degree angle. Find me a picture of anyone firing a gun precisely vertically.

A bullet traveling at only 150 feet per second (46 m/s) to170 feet per second (52 m/s) can penetrate human skin, and at 200 feet per second (60 m/s) it can penetrate the skull.

You are confusing force with kinetic energy. The kinetic energy of the missile, which is what does the damage, is ½ mv².
