Stopped By Police In Bangkok On Songkran!

Featured Replies

It was around 1.30am on the first day of Songkran in Bangkok.

Turned from Petchaburi Rd to Rama 9. There was a road block. Policeman jumped in front of my car and i heard at least two police shouting Farang farang (thought thats a bit racist but nevermind).

I stopped and wound down the window. Copper said "Songkran" I replied " Mai khao jai" The copper laughed. He repiled " Songkran, Mao mai?" I replied "No"

He said ok go!

I could of been pissed out of my head......

Just wanted to share me experience as i thought songkran was the time of year when police crack down? but obviously they dont?

Makes me think if i wanna go out and have a drink i will take my car with me clap2.gif

Anyone else get pulled over and what happened?

Now now, repeat after me, this is not racism, this is tribalism

Yes if you want to die or more important kill innocents, drink and drive...

Well the local Metropolitan Police office on his chicken chasing motorbike pulled me over this last month in Bangkok saying i went through a red light! Ok officer how much tea money do you want? what 500 baht? then he asked me for my Thai driving licence but i left it in our apartment so he put another 500 on top so its now up to 1,000 baht...lol I then turned to the fiancee & asked her to sort this mess out!! so in the end it came back down to 200 baht...

Hang on, there is more!! I only had a 1,000 baht note so he said to the gf there is a 7-11 store just down the road where you can change it lol....we had a Police escort to the 7-11......

The morals/dangers of drink driving aside;

During holiday periods, namely Songkran and traditional New Year, the fines for drink driving are exponentially higher, in response to Governments trying to deal with the carnage on the roads.

Typically getting caught "pissed out of your head" during the holiday period will see you placed in the lock up for at least 12 hours and fines up to 20,000B; different reports from different areas.

There is a very concise and well written account of this in the Pattaya forum just last week.

A friend of mine got busted two NYE's ago on Sukhumvit. That cost him over 30,000B because the Lumpini police were adamant he was going to have to spend the night in the cell until he coughed up 30 large, and he wasn't even "pissed out of his head", only over the legal limit on the meter.

She normally gets it down to 100 baht but because I left driving licence in room he was having none of it...it was pay or he would have followed me to my condo to take my DL to the courts n that is a 12 day wait!

Always have DL on you at all times! biggrin.png
