... we read daily about this simply incredibile stupidity ... at some point, does it make sense to ask: "Are Thais capable of learning?"

... what is it? ... something in the DNA? ... how they are educated? ... their socialization? ... what?

... I just don't get it.

You have raised some interesting questions.

Their society differs to western ones hence their life is totally different, their logic, education, family life.....et cetera.

No one can answer the question but the education is playing a main role so as the family life. They do what they see and experience.

The "mai pen rai" frame of mind won`t let other people raise concerns, give suggestions or criticize.

This is why nuts sit behind the wheels day by day and drive heedlessly. No one tells them that is not right what they do.

No need to insult me. You made incorrect claims about that car. However as is often the case, some people have to report to foul language in order to express themselves whilst successfully masking their ignorance.

Have a nice day, whilst dreaming about 18,000 RPM F1 Porsche motors.

Don't think many understand the importance of working tail lights as well.

Of course they don't, and neither do most of the traffic policemen.

I flagged down a traffic policeman on Rama 9 road in stand-still traffic to tell him the car in front of me didn't have properly functioning tail lights, only to be smiled at. He just rode past the car without even glancing at it!

I've seen countless policemen break traffic rules, and even been in a traffic accident due to a policeman making an illegal u-turn across a double lined road. The pick-up in front of me had to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the policeman, and I rear ended the pick up. We had both just turned out of a side road and were accelerating when the policeman pulled up in front of the pick-up. I might have been a bit close due to on-coming traffic but I wasn't doing more than 30 kph. The policeman's story was that he was on-duty. Go figure.

There are two kinds of racists in the world:

(1) “I am not a racist, I just think people of other colors and cultures are inferior and should be treated like animals.”

(2) “I am a racist, and make no apologies for it. I hate these people.”

If I had to choose, I would actually prefer the company of “Group 2.” At least they are honest.

Is Thai Visa really just a chat room for racists?

Yesterday, the Expat community lost a dear friend, a truly unique individual and he will be missed by those who knew him. I was impressed by the genuine and thoughtful postings. Not corny, or “hippie philosophy” or “all about me” Real genuine sorrow and support for those who were saddened by his passing.

Well, you see…Thai people, and let me underscore that…they are people, just like you…with friends; families and feelings…also suffer when people die. It is not funny, it is not a time to judge, second guess and paint with a broad brush of insensitive hate.

Many postings seem to create a “mirror world” reality. When Western Politicians engage in every conceivable crime, up to and including murder…it is “Business as usual, nothing to see here..move on.”

Same behavior from a Thai? The Devil Walks the Earth! Beware! Hide the women and children!

When hundreds of Thai people die in holiday accidents…Thai Visa sees it as fodder for joke after joke. When there is a tragic accident, it is “Good riddance, one less monkey to feed.” When an expat dies…the correct, respectful and sincere postings come to the surface.

Why is it funny when Thai people die? Why is it funny when Thais lose their homes in floods? Why is it only Thai politicians who tell convenient lies and break rules?

Why do you live here?

Firstly I'd like to state that I'm Thai.

I see nothing wrong with making fun of those that died while driving at excessive speeds, breaking the law, or driving irresponsibly. It's also a way of laughing at the irresponsible authorities that don't put enough measures to limit such behavior.

As for the sincere condolences for the farang who passed away, maybe it's because he wasn't doing something questionable when he died? Had he been found in a closet naked and hung by underwear with used condoms and porn strewn around the motel room, don't you think the comments would be different?

If you are Thai, I can almost guarantee you are Thai-Chinese. With your apparent near-native ability in English, your family is probably elite and sent you off to school outside of the country. I like you guys (the Thai-Chinese). Most of the time, the corrupt and idiotic things that happen in Thailand are really the result of the somewhat less developed native Thai culture. The Thai-Chinese are what have made/built most of the good things in Thailand. So, whenever I encounter a Thai-Chinese, I always show them respect and thank them for trying to move Thailand in the right direction.

Thanks!

Yes, and I've lived there for 3 years... Fujian area. Your rebuttal is not really valid here as I am not talking about China. The Chinese in Thailand -- generally relatively far wealthier than your typical mainland Chinese -- are quite a world different. They are Thailand's elite. If you want a better comparison, you'd compare to Hong Kong Chinese or Singapore Chinese. All elite. No culture is perfect, but the Chinese are a great civilization of people known all over the world for their work ethic and ambition. They've shaped Thailand into a 'somewhat' modern (although still rather superficially so) modern country and continue to take it in a good direction.

More to the topic, for example, in China, let's say a similar accident happened. Let's say the a guy in a Porsche ran down another car by carelessly doing almost double the speed limit.. And, let's say that the guy in the Porsche happened to live. In China, no matter how wealthy the guy in the Porsche is, he'd be arrested and some punishment would be handed out. I'm not saying that this would occur 100% of the time. Again, no place is perfect. But, in Thailand, you NEVER hear about anyone with wealth or power EVER being given serious punishment for their crimes.

Native Thai culture is lazy. The Chinese had the Great Leap Forward and look at them today. In just a couple decades they are moving forward at incredible speed. Shanghai is as modern a city as most any in Europe or the US. The growth in wealth is extraordinary. They actually apply rule of law -- quite seriously in fact. People are sacked for crimes -- even powerful people. Hell, people are even executed for heinous crimes. Thailand? No way. 'mai pen rai'. There's no 'mai pen rai' in China.

The accident is another clear example of the cultural failure of the Thais to be responsible.

Native Thai culture is lazy. The Chinese had the Great Leap Forward and look at them today.

Most of your drivel is amusing but this piece really takes the cake.

http://en.wikipedia....at_Leap_Forward

The Great Leap ended in catastrophe, resulting in tens of millions of excess deaths.[2] Estimates of the death toll range from 18 million[3] to at least 45 million
Historian Frank Dikötter asserts that "coercion, terror, and systematic violence were the very foundation of the Great Leap Forward" and it "motivated one of the most deadly mass killings of human history."

OK, this bit you took was not directly on topic but part of my overall point that there is no improvement over time here with respect to law enforcement or education. That's all.

As for your assertion that my comment was drivel, consider that the there were all kinds of deaths during the French Revolution as well. Also true of the American Civil War. Just two examples. Who said progress was smooth and easy and without sacrifice? Is that what you are implying? Feel free to message me privately as I don't want to encourage off-topic replies.

As I said recently in another post, "Thailand is a colony of China and has been for many years". Thais pride themselves on never having been colonized, maybe not militarily by the British or French or Japanese, but surreptitiously over several generations, Chinese have taken over and seem to be doing a damned good job of running the country for their benefit.

As for the 'other' Thais, well, that's for another day.

Of course you make a good point ,however there may be something else to add to the equation ,whatever the circumstances Thai's without an exception will never ever admit they could be wrong (loss of face) ,in laymans lingo its always the other party at fault never theirs when having a "pileup" with another vehicle , So in this they will never ever learn from their mistakes cos in their minds they never made a mistake in the first instance, and although I could be wrong this may well be born out by the Porsche drivers loved ones who will not think FOR A SECOND that the reason for his sad demise was that he was driving at a speed that could only be described as "SUICIDAL"sad.png Maybe Member Mel would like to add further to my post. I notice the "accident" occurred in the Right hand lane , Thai's are notorious "road hogs" and so how wide the road is ,many insist on driving in the outside lane and no matter how much you flash your headlight or sound your horn they just WILL NOT move to the left so the car at the rear can safely and legally overtake , I have truly lost count of observing them driving in the outside lane then swing to their left to make a left hand turn without even indicating their intentions !!. the "rule of the road" is quite simple ,keep to the left unless overtaking or turning right , this bit of common sense it Totally unknown to the vast majority of Thai drivers.

There was a 3rd vehicle involved. Possibly, the Fortuner was, indeed, in the coveted right lane to pass this vehicle.

280 KPH equates to over 250 feet per second. Doesn't leave many options when closing in on much slower traffic.

Then again, at impact, the accelerator may have locked, causing the spike in the speedo.

Of course there are loads of "possibiltys" as to why this happened ,but that does not alter the simple fact that most Thai's are not fit the push a baby carriage never mind a high powered car, and lets be honest about this ,the so called"driving test" is a joke, this coupled with bone idle police who do not do the job they are paid for, upholding the law , is a recipe for disaster, it brought a smile to my face when I read about the 7 "dangerous days" over Songkran ,of course I apologize for being brutally truthful but the "dangerous days" on Thailand,s roads are 365 days to the year!.

Gotta agree with inference that this dude or Thais in general must be complete morons when driving a vehicle. A GT2 has excellent brakes and anyone with an ounce of anticipation could have slowed a GT2 down quick enough to avoid slamming into a SUV type of vehicle from behind at a rate if speed to cause this type of accident. I teach Porsche DEs on race tracks, club race and did GT3 Cup for 7 years and know how rapidly one can slow these thungs down if paying the least biy of attention. I cannot recall a seeing a real sports car run up on the back of a moving vehicle at such a high rate of speed. You see dudes loosing tail, oversteer, hit someone pulling out in front of them or mainly clipping something and losing control and having a secondary impact. Dude was either drunk, really dumb with slow reflexes, or pick up merged over into his lane at last second and he had extremely slow reaction and little to mo anticipation. Driving at speed one constantly has to access every contingency well up the road and be prepared for it. With the handling and capabilities of a GT2, one should be able to avoid most situations. Oversteering and/or swapping ends and running off road is somewhat expected for neophyte drivers, but running up the rear of a moving vehicle at that speed is beyond neophyte.

as far as I am concerned, the Chinese in the region (& I have lived in several countries in the region), have only added to the well-being of the countries they have effectively taken over at the expense of the indigenous population.....& they have undermined & done their best to ruin local culture & manners -but they've got away with huge amounts of cash....

any idea why they were so scared to be in Indo in 98/99?

bad self-centred people IMO (informed)

as for the comments abt the crash, & the racism thereof, there was one stupid comment abt it being an instance of "Thai-bashing" - totally stupid, whoever posted it - all people here are saying is they don't want to be killed by moronic Thais driving in a moronic manner - maybe it's "fearism" - i know I'm concerned whenever I have to drive a decent distance.

as for the crap about "if u don't like it here - why don't u go somewhere else" - to me that's just a feeble comment from someone who is prepared to accept things as they are - pathetic - there is nothing wrong with making constructive &/or critical comments about things in the country you choose to live in, hoping eventually things may improve.....

Agree with your comments 100%. sadly, those GT2's were very much faster than most ender user's abilities! He ran out of talent. He probably would have run out of talent in a Toyota Vios as well.

What it boils down to is quickness of thought or "reaction time" I live on a main road and I make sure my little girl shouts me after school so I can safely escort her across the road ,of course I always look to my left and right for on coming traffic , I have truly lost count of the times were there has been a Thai on a motorcycle waiting to cross the road just the same as me , were upon I have observed at least 300 metres away a slow moving car approaching from my right, on this I cross the road take hold of my little girls hand and cross back in complete safety ,whilst the Thai is still waiting there for the car to pass even though his journey is only one way (across the road) ,Although I could be wrong it would appear that Quickness of thought is just not in their make up!.

You make it sound like everything was ok to be driving at 28ok's on a road full of the general public...families with children...perhaps not so much at that time of night.....but like you think it was to be doing this and the only bad thing was his inability to control it.....how about the speed limit to some extent ??

What ws the ethic, socio-economic origin of the driver? As for the Thai Chinese being the fountain of all that is good in Thailand. Piffle.

Yes, big business in Thailand is Thai Chinese and of course they never pay for access or favour, and also, by the way, the emporer is naked too.

Probably not a politically correct statement but it just goes to show, even the upper class are not immune to the Thai driving mentality! RIP if you can find any.

Especially when alcohol is probably the main culprit hereburp.gif

I wonder if the "truth" will ever come out? (if he was drunk or not)
