Hi all, friend of mine has very few pages left in his passport and I went round to help him fill in his replacement passport form. He only has a 14 day visa from the Aran/poipet border( live local ). How can he send off for a new passport but still go over to Cambodia when visa runs out ? He won't have a passport. Thanks all

Regardless the passport is invalid for travel once application received for replacement and electronically canceled. If it takes longer than current permitted to stay they should obtain visa first (if space allows) or a temp passport to allow travel to obtain. But believe most will just overstay and upon receipt of new passport pay the fine when they exit. But if not in tending air exit person should be aware being stopped prior to border could result in jail and court (have not seen many recent reports but it is possible).

A return by air would allow 30 days or a tourist visa likely 60 days stay.

either way that the person does this they will be on overstay. A temporary passport will only be issued if required for an emergency case, not to hold the person over until a new one arrives.

The poster needs to clarify the nationality of the passport holder, as if American then pages can be added to it.

Well, why doesn't he front up at the embassy or consulate and have the pages inserted. What am I missing?

An American can have pages inserted, a British passport cannot, and am sure European passports are the same as the British one.

There is clause in police order 777/2551 (on net cafe computer that won't let me open file) that states that a person can get an extension if requested by an embassy. He could contact his embassy about getting a letter requesting the extension based upon his need of a new passport and his permit to stay is running out. Then go to immigration and get an extension if they issue the letter and apply for an extension (1900 baht). He could also apply for a 7 day extension. The 1900 fee for an extension is less than 4 days of overstay.

Sorry for lack of info. He is British and he says he was told he would have to send passport, when I was helping him fill out the forms I couldn't see where it says to submit passport but he is adamant that he was told to do so. I have asked him to phone up the person giving him this advice today and I will pop round to see him this evening. He is 77 and doesn't want a trip to bangkok, he lost his partner last year, she used to help him with all this. I am hoping the phone call will sort out the passport query for him, thanks for your quick replies.

What nationality?

A person applying for a British Passport does not send their passport with the application.

Hi beano, can I just clarify with you?

He's British and has 2 pages left in passport, he is sending forms off to renew passport including photos, fee and birth certificate. He doesn't need to send his passport does he?

No he does not send passport - only application/photo/money but passport becomes invalid upon receipt by the office providing new passport so can not be used for travel but can still be used for ID inside Thailand. This is a special condition for Thailand and no contact with Embassy is required. If he has several pages it would be best for him to obtain a new tourist visa and make application for new passport after return as there will not be any issue of overstay.

Here copied for your friend:

Specific requirements from Thailand

ORIGINAL PASSPORT: Thailand is an exception to the main guidance given on our primary website. It is not advised to be without your original passport in Thailand and we recognise this. You may therefore submit a clear photocopy of your passport (just the page with your personal details and photograph). Please note that the passport being renewed will be electronically cancelled and is therefore not valid for use as a travel document from the moment you submit your application. On receipt of your new passport, you must physically cancel your old passport by cutting the corners of the photo page and the front and back covers. Failure to do so may leave your replaced passport open to abuse. Alternatively, you should visit the British Embassy in Bangkok to have your replaced passport physically cancelled. Please be aware when transferring your visas the Immigration Bureau may request a letter from the British Embassy.
