Thai PM affirms govt's policy to support tourism industry

BANGKOK, May 3 -- Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Wednesday reaffirmed Thailand's policy to support the tourism industry as its development was one of the urgent policy concerns the government announced to implement during its first year in office.

Ms Yingluck spoke on the subject to visiting United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary-General Taleb Rifai who paid a courtesy call on her at Government House.

Mr Rifai is in Thailand to attend the 24th Joint Meeting of the UNWTO’s Commission for East Asia and the Pacific, its Commission for South Asia and its High-level Regional Conference on Green Tourism in the northern province of Chiang Mai.

UNWTO is a specialised agency of the United Nations and the leading international organisation in the field of tourism. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and is a practical source of tourism know-how.

The secretary general stressed the importance of the tourism as it is a major industry able to mobilise economic growth, as well as to support employment and development.

Ms Yingluck said that the tourism business was a crucial industry with strategic importance because it can generate income for the kingdom.

She said her government has launched a new tourism promotion campaign, "Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012-2013," and will further develop facilities to support the tourism business, particularly world standards of security to protect tourist lives and property.

The Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand is a year long tourism campaign focusing on the tradition, culture and unique aspects of Thailand and ‘Thainess'.

She earlier said that her government has targeted generating tourism industry revenues of two trillion baht within the next five years.

Today Mr Rifai gave Ms Yingluck an open letter for the Global Leaders for Tourism Campaign prepared by UNWTO and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), calling on countries not yet involved to join the campaign.

Twenty-six national leaders have received the open letter from the UNWTO and WTTC emphasising that tourism is a vital part of the global economy, driving not only employment opportunities but also the push towards a Green Economy. (MCOT online news)

"Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand 2012-2013"

I am not a native English speaker, but it sounds a bit strange.

Is that correct?

If it attracts one extra tourist, it will surely be a miracle.

BAR girl=she said I love you, he said I love you too, she then said I love you 3, How long you stay-we can look family, (good for tourism as it gets the family out the Shizen) you lubly and if you boring we can go shopping. Tourism thrives on this, it pumps more into the Rural Thais pockets than any other formats.  If you do NOT take care of the farrang sex tourist, you will die a slow death, as is seen at the minute.  It is all well and good spending millions on promoting Miracle Thailand but without getting shut of the scams and the immigration penalties put on stayers here, you are going down a wrong road.

For me the South of Thailand serves two purposes....

1. I have to land land there on an International flight...

2. I connect as fast as I can, to get out of their, and head North.....

As for Yingluck? She is just a poster girl for her brother......

The problem with 2012 in Thailand being called the 'Miracle Year' is that it implies next year won't be so good.

Do the government know something we don't?

"You pay jet ski."

They want to be competitive in the global marketplace? Here's a revolutionary idea. Put the account out to bid among the world's top ad agencies. Then hire contract tourism professionals to review the bids and shortlist the group to two agencies and let them pitch their strategies. Only problem is, they won't be kicking back to anybody to get the account. Oh well, scratch that idea. Maybe a film festival, that has a lot to do with toursim....not.

Miracle Year of Amazing Thailand

Good grief, where do they get these slogans? Ok, it probably started in Thai, sounded ok (in Thai), and then someone translated it. But geeze, do they not have anyone in TAT who is fluent enough in english to say that just does not sound right.

And what policies exactly is she reaffirming? That the jet ski scams, the BiB scams, the tuk-tuk and taxi scams will continue unabated?

Good point about where do they get these slogans. Wasn't there something about some people having birthdays this year and that is why they call it a Miracle Year?

I just noticed "Year" and "2012-2013" aren't that 2?

Well if someone has birthday 2012, than there is a high probability that this person has also birthday 2013 blink.png

But why no birthday in the non miracle year of 2014?

(My old mother tells me all the time that my English goes down the hill since I am in Thailand....I feel it is going faster now....)

She would make a nice ambassador for the walking street, or cowboy, or nana.

Why doesn't anyone in the Government wake up to the fact that it is useless trying to attract tourists to Thailand. They stay two weeks; get scammed and gouged then leave, vowing to tell all their friends how opportunistic the police are.

Why not concentrate your efforts on getting tourists to stay for fifty weeks a year by becoming retirees? You could allow them to own their own home; make long stay visas easy; abolish ninety day reporting.

In return, we promise to take care of the millions of Thai ladies and Thai children abandoned every year by Thai men. We promise to improve schooling; revolutionise farming and attract thousands of new tourists annually by bringing over our farang families to visit their aging but happy papa.

Is everyone 50 sheets to the wind on this topic. Jeeez lolweeez. You all need to do something different in your lives. You know take a break from the same old whiskey/beer dribble that seems to be a constant on this forum. Thailand is a miracle and is pretty f*#%king amazing.

Did Azerbaijan choose "Amazing" before Thailand, or have they copied it from the Thais. ???? They're Advert for the country is very special, well thought out, NOT fruit and flowers "Sawadee Kha".....Better they say there is something for everybody here---but we will win.

The problem with 2012 in Thailand being called the 'Miracle Year' is that it implies next year won't be so good.

Do the government know something we don't?

Yes that's when the economy will collapse from all the populist BS policies... It is all planned so big T can make his money back playing the FX game (again). I am looking forward to 40+baht to the dollar once more in the not too distant future.
