DDPM: No. of disaster-hit provinces rise further

BANGKOK, 5 May 2012 (NNT) – The country’s drought crisis continues with another province officially declared crisis zone.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM)’s Director General Viboon Sanguanpong said that, since February 2nd, there are up to 51 provinces, which have been hit hard by drought.

Out of this, 32 provinces are noted to be severely affected by the dry spell, 9 of them are experiencing moderate crisis while the other 10 have been minimally hit.

Mr. Viboon also reported that the amount of water currently stored at nationwide reservoirs stood at 39.07 billion cubic meters, or 56 percent of total capacity and 1.9 billion cubic meters more than the same period of last year.

At the same time, rain has started to fall in many areas across the country, with Chai Badan District of Lopburi Province reported to experience the highest rainfall of 109.8 millimeters, while the highest temperature in the country during the past 24 hours was 40.1 degrees Celsius registered in Tak. Nong Bua Lamphu and Nakhon Sawan provinces had a slightly lower temperature of 39.6 degrees Celsius.

Blaze breaks out in Map Ta Phut reportedly after explosion

MAP TA PUT: -- A fire broke out in Map Taphut Industrial Estate in Rayong province Saturday afternoon.

It is still unclear about the cause of the fire. Witnesses claimed they heard sounds of explosion before the blaze started.

Firefighters already rushed to scene.
