What Do You Do For Fun?

Featured Replies

Hi all! I've moved to Bkk 4 weeks ago, with my hubby. He works full time, which leaves me to fend for myself most of the time ( and'no', I do not worry about him being seduced by any of his female -or male- collegues :D ). Now, I'm a big girl and can look after myself, and having moved here from London I'm used to living in a big city...but it does get a bit lonely sometimes... :D . Surely I can't be the only one who came to Bangkok because of her other half, or at least not the only one who spends a lot of time on her own? I'm not into big parties, clubbing, drinking and all that ( :o yeah, I know-you don't hear that much in these parts...). However, I do really like Bangkok, and I would love to make the most of the year I am going to spend here. Anyone up for maybe meeting up and exploring the city together? Or any good advice on how to keep myself busy? I'm trying to get some work with a 'soi dog' project. Does anyone else do charity work? What are your experiences?

Or any good advice on how to keep myself busy?

There are quite a few womans networks such as BNOW, Aust-Thai womans group etc etc that might be useful touching base with. Google bangkok woman group and you are sure to find something that interests you. They often do charity and fundraising work and are prob good for networking.

You could take some Thai cooking classes, too, in addition to photography and the handicraft classes already mentioned. Do you do any crafts already? Cross stitch supplies are readily available. I just dream of a quilt done in Thai silks. You could take an online course in computer programming or web design.

I suspect that it's not "something to do" you need so much as someone to do it with. So many thinga are more fun to do with a companion.

Learn the language! :o Also most of the ladies here are quite accessible and I'm quite positive would enjoy new company.

A lot of the ladies on this forum are living/working in BKK & we have a meet up thread pinned on this section, maybe read through & contact a few of the girls for a lunch date? :o

Thank you very much for all your advice. Two more questions: Bambina- where did you take the photography course, and how much can I expect to pay? And any recommendations on where to go for Thai language lessons? Are the language schools any good, or shall I opt for one-to-on lessons?

What do I do for fun? (Not necessarily in order.)

1. I play with my "baby", my computer. (Fiddle with it, Fix it -- which I do almost every day, etc. etc.)

2. Drink Properly (From 6PM til 6AM! This routine vary from time to time like Drinking Properly by the swimming pool, Drinking Properly at a friend's house, Drinking Properly at a club til 2AM, Drinking Properly at a club til 8AM, and etc. etc. etc.)

3. Party!

4. Attend Yoga Class.

5. Read a funny book.

6. Listen to Music.

7. "Disco-Dancing"

8. Bar-hopping.

9. Bowling.

10. Build Websites.

11. Write Friends.

12. Cook for Friends and for myself.

13. "Cross-Stitch" (Embroidery.)

14. Bowling.

15. Shopping (At the malls, botiques, flea markets, side-walk shops, etc. etc. etc.)

16. Fine Dining.

17. Call and "Bug" friends and/or acquaintances.

18. Lay in Bed and "THINK"

19. Go to the park! (to run, read a book there, to watch people or to catch some air.)

20. SLEEP. (For a working and party girl like me, SLEEP is precious.)

Lately?

So it isn't only me. :D

Nakhon is not a bustling town but life here is fun, though not what most would call exciting.

I enjoy time with my daughter and husband, read, go to the beach, go to the mountains, paint, bicycle, cook. It's a simple life, I love it.

Once in a while, we go to Samui for dancing and farang food for me.

Ladies I hope you don't mind me posting here but I having taken early retirement am in a situation where I have a lot of free time whilst the girlfriend works - I thought of Thai cookery classes and wondered if anyone could recommend somewhere.

Thanks

Welcome! As for the cookery course, where are you located? I am sure there are plenty on offer around the country but if you could give us a specific location one of us may be able to give you more info.

And just as an FYI, I think a cookery course is an excellent idea for someone who would like to learn more about Thailand. I learned from my husband, my mother-in-law and my sister-in-law. I even learned to pound my own curry paste (once, never again!), open a coconut and scrape it.

Hi, I'm a new member, but have lived in Bangkok for many years, so thought I could add a few ideas:

For language courses, if you really want to make progress I'd recommend an intensive one such as the course offered at Union Language School on Thanon Surawongse. Classes are 4 hours a day, and each course lasts 1 month. This program can get you speaking at a basic level within the first month, and reading & writing Thai (and speaking with relatively good pronunciation, a rare thing for many farangs) within a few months.

Book clubs--there are a few about town--check out any used English language book store near by and ask if they sponsor a book club. Great way to meet like minded people and have an interesting evening out.

Dance--there's more than a few dance studios offering a variety of classes, including jazz, ballet, Latin, ballroom. If you like Latin, there's a few night clubs with salsa, Zouk, etc, that also offer classes.

Cheers!
