Peter, there are an abundance of good restaurants with variable pricing.

This is your experience which one must respect, but many of our ex pat friends who have lived on the island for many years are very enthusiastic about the island.

Again its a question of preference/choices, budget etc. I would never have gone to Bali had I listened to all and sundry, I must see for myself.. and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves away from the maddening crowds.

For me the beach life here in Australia is amazing, but we are more than happy to explore the Asian aspects to see what they have to offer us. As it has been said there are loads of other places to see if one wanders off for a few days making Langkawi your base. I am looking forward to it, and hopefully be able to share our experiences with other members with photographs also.

Happy Days!

Langkawi is a island reached by ferry or plane, how can you make that your base to visit other places???

You will not be taking many photos in my opinion

I did not meet many expats who actually lived there a total of 3

Seen the place we have no wish to go back again, much better places in Thailand to visit

I am glad you like the place you sound like someone involved in the tourist business there

We had a holiday in Bali last year and will not be returning there again either its much changed

from 15 years ago

I do not have a budget for holidays if we want to see somewhere or something we do

"much better places in Thailand to visit" - Peter, can you name a few places and why they are better to visit????

I will give you some credit Peter, at least you went and seen for yourself and formed your own opinion. I just happen to disagree with your discription of Langkawi.

Many here say Phuket is the best, and when asked where else have they been to compare the place to, they say, "No where else." Credibility Zero.

Langkawi is a miniature version of Phuket, not much to do or see

Taxis are cheap, scooter hire expensive

No bars or bar ladies that should put a few people off

We will not return far more interesting places in Thailand to visit

Langkawi is a miniture verson of what Phuket used to be.

Taxis and drivers are cheap, so most people do not require to hire a bike.

I don't know where you stayed, but there were plenty of beach bars (bars on the sand) where I stayed.

Yes, there are no prostitutes in the bars hounding you to buy a drink for them and BS'ing to you while a DJ is playing music so loud you can not have a coversation with anyone. Langkawi is not a brothel like most tourist islands in Thailand. You do not get sex tourist going there.

Langkawi is small. It has some places of interest. Eg. the cable car. It is a place to retire to with a partner. Malaysia has some of the best foreign ownership of land laws for foreigners. Has very easy visa laws for foreigners.Eg. 90 day visa exemption stamp on arrival. Langkawi has been made a tax free island to promote tourism, so things are cheap. It has not been turned into a concrete jungle and exploited like Phuket.

"Far more interesting places in Thailand to visit." Can you define what you mean by "interesting." Can you also name some places in Thailand and why they are interesting.

Langkawi is only one part of Malaysia, like Phuket is only one part of Thailand.

It's a very relaxing place.

i could tell u 50 islands in thailand that are better than langkawi. langkawi is a commercial resort island with way over the top prices for food and hotels ,

and the beaches are below average by thai standards.

i cant believe namkanman is saying that most islands have prostitutes, loud music etc ..what a load of rubbish.

u can find many islands in thailand where there is no bars/barladys or loudMusic.in fact most of them are like this.

btw how would u describe a sex tourist ? let me guess, a white middle aged man with an asian women?

I know quiet tropical islands exist in Thailand. I gave one example - Koh Samet. The OP kept comparing Langkawi to Phuket. You can't, they are not the same, and I hope they never will be. The only fair comparison is Phuket around 20 years ago - but that is in the past.

My definition of a sex tourist is someone who travels to a destination for the main purpose of having sex with prostitutes, or children. They are not interested in the culture, cuisine, history, religion or language. They may engage in other pleasures like swimming and sunbaking but the main reason they chose that particular destination was for the availability and affordability of sexual services. That could be "a middle aged white man" going to South East Asia, or a middle aged Japanese man going to South East Asia, or a European man going to Eastern Europe or any other combination and destination you like.

You would be very naive to think Thailand does not get a hell of a lot of sex tourist. Next time you fly into Thailand, take note of the ratio of males to females onboard your flight.

In post 5 i said there are a lot of places in Thailand we would prefer to visit so i was not comparing Langkawi to Phuket only

I should not have to tell you where they are, get of your bum and go and look for yourself

There are interesting places and sites to see all over Thailand fro Chang Mai in the north to Songkla

in the south, in Isaan we saw 2 ancient temples one built in a extict volcano, plenty of historic sites in Ayutthaya

Get of the sex tourist thing, no one i know in Thailand is a sex tourist, Are you since you carry on about it???

I was asked to comment on sex tourist, and I did. I am not going on about it.

I've traveled Thailand and South East Asia, extensively. I actually have been to all the places you mention.

Why are you comparing one small tropical island of Malatsia, to EVERYWHERE in Thailand???? Malaysia has many places of interest and things to see and do, they are not all on Langkawi. Just like there are no temples built on dormant volcanos on Koh Samet. Malaysia is an Islamic nation. You have been in a temple inThailand, did you go into a mosque in Malaysia/Langkawi? If not, why not? Malaysia also has major events that Thailand does not have. Eg. a Formula 1 grand prix.

You will not give an example of a "far more interesting places in Thailand to visit" so I will use one that you mentioned, Samui. Can you tell me why Samui is a more interesting place to visit????

The food was good at some places but certainly not cheap

Thai food there did not taste like Thai food in most places

600 baht for a 150GM steak that was only suitable to resole your shoes

The only decent restaurant we found was the Orkid Ria seafood and Thai retaurant

packed with customers every night from 6PM all the rest were empty

Beer about 60 to 70 baht a can in restaurants, i usually have 2 or 3 cans and could not care

less if it was 150 baht a can

So, you go to Malaysia to eat in a Thai restaurant and expect it to be authentic Thai, like it is in Thailand. smile.pngsmile.png You probably shouldn't have gone in the first place.

You remind me of tourist who comes to Thailand, and then heads straight to McDonalds to eat. smile.png

Actually its my wife who prefers Thai food i am happy trying any type of food

Mcdonalds is junk food as far as i am concerned and i do not eat it

The restaurant i mentioned has excellent Thai food made by Thais

If you think Langkawi is great why dont you shift there

I might move there one day - at least I keep an open mind to the option.

One question, if your wife absolutely loved Langkawi, what would your opinion of Langkawi be???? smile.pngsmile.pngsmile.pngsmile.png

Exactly the same, we went to have a look at the place and will not return which applies to other holiday destinations

we have visited

My wife is not a ex bar girl and has never worked in any occupation involving tourist, just a normal happy Thai person

which the majority of Thais are and her tastes are the same as mine

You need to have visited a place recently to have a opinion of it, which by following your posts you have not done

Peter, don't let yourself get wound up by people who's only purpose is slagging of Phuket, so Langkawi has to be better. You have been there recently and have your opinion of it, end of story.

people the majority are nice people

Personally i have never been scammed here but i do not hang around red light districts late at night

Peter, you are "made to feel welcome in a Buddhist temple" but only get "funny looks" in a mosque, but you state you have never been in a mosque????????

I may move to Langkawi one day. I rule nothing out in this region. It may only take a change in visa laws here and you, me and many others could be looking for a new place to live. Who knows the future. Currently, for me, the good still outweighs the bad on Phuket, but I do not know how I will feel in a few years time. I've repeatedly stated, in my opinion, the island is heading in the wrong direction for being a pleasant place for tourist and expats.

I have been to South Africa. I've been to the places you have mentioned, but my favourite SA places were Jeffery's Bay and Stellenbosch.

My point is Peter, you went to Langkawi expecting to sample all Malaysia has to offer, in one spot, on a small tropical island. Many go to Langkawi to unwind and relax, just like many go to small Thai islands for the same. It's not party central, a cultural hub, their capital city, their political hub, religious hub etc etc. It is what it is - a very small, quiet, tropical island.

As I type this post, I see there has been yet ANOTHER violent robbery on Phuket involving a stabbing. This robbery occured nowhere near the "red light area" involving drunks.

I'm happy to hear what makes Samui a much more interesting island to visit?

I've repeatedly stated, in my opinion, the island is heading in the wrong direction for being a pleasant place for tourist and expats.

Statements like this always confuse me. You quite correctly state that it's only your opinion, but you say it's your opinion of how other people are feeling!!

The tourists keep coming and the vast majority of expats remain happy.

So what you actually have, is YOUR opinion of how YOU feel about Phuket and how the way it's changing affects YOU. That's not the same thing at all.

You constantly say " I may have to leave Phuket one day" as if everybody is waiting with baited breath to follow you to the airport!

When that day comes (which it will) You will just be another person that lived in Phuket, found it wasn't right for you, or it changed to become so, and then left. Phuket will carry on being a place millions of people adore and choose to visit on holidays regularly and call their home.

You are desperately trying to encourage people to agree with your anti Phuket views, but one day, probably when you are living somewhere else but still reading this forum regularly, you will realise that it was just you, and that everybody else is still over the moon with the place they have chosen to live.

Langkawi is only one part of Malaysia, like Phuket is only one part of Thailand.

It's a very relaxing place.

Sorry, I worked my way backwards through this thread.

I find it strange how in this thread you talk about girlie bars as if they are disgusting and are a negative part of Phuket, yet in many other threads you have boasted about your use of them and have started threads to share tips on how not to be ripped off when using them! Do you have a twin brother?

Not saying this in the obvious 'don't let the door hit your arse' kind of way. But seriously, if you talk about Phuket the way you do and then you talk as if you are adamant that Langkawi is so much better, why wouldn't you move there? It defies logic IMO.

Langkawi is a island reached by ferry or plane, how can you make that your base to visit other places???

Why would you expect anywhere in the world to be like it was 15 years ago? Did you not do any research before you went? You should always be able to get enough info on line before you go anywhere, so that you aren't totally surprised by how the place is.

I have to say some people blow my mind. I've never been there but I know 100% if I went there tomorrow I would have a great time. I certainly wouldn't be sitting there with my notebook looking for things to moan about. You seem to be slagging the place off as if you have had you nose put out of joint or been mislead somehow.

What you are in fact doing is the exact same thing you don't like people doing about Phuket, and basing a very strong 'personal' opinion on a very short visit. Your comment on only meeting 3 expats is a good example. Perhaps that's because they know better places to go that a 5 day tourist wouldn't know, the same way you do in Phuket.

One of the most memerable mosques I have been in is The Blue Mosque in Istanbul - Turkey. Spectacular. You can google it. No "funny looks" - it's a major tourist attraction.

As for Africa, I have been to Egypt, Kenya, Uganda,Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and South Africa. I loved my time in Africa.

I've been to Samui a few times. I like Samui. There are many islands in Thailand that are just like Langkawi - small, quiet, no prostitues and drunk tourist etc etc. Would you like, or dislike, these islands???? I gave one example in Koh Samet. You probaly should have viewed Langkawi in the same light.

I like Langkawi for these same reasons. It's a nice break from Phuket and an easy visa run.

I still enjoy living on Phuket, but for me, I have doubts about what Phuket will be like in another 5 to 10 years. If it becomes unsafe, unaffordable, lacks infastructure, political instability, visa law changes etc etc etc - I will re-assess my choice of residence and will move. Vietnam, Bali and Langkawi will all be considered. Anyway, that's a bit off topic.

What boat trip are you talking about, we caught the ferry from Satun in Thailand and it was nothing special

A days boat cruise in Phang Na bay is a much better experience and more enjoyable excluding James Bond island

It apears that there is a new harbour and route.

It is some years since I went and will never forget the small boat trip from Kuala Perlis through the fiords. It seems the new fery does not go there. My apologies, though if you can go through them they are beautiful.
