Pheu Thai MP opposes Jatuporn's ministerial appointment

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai MP Chalong Raewrang has stepped out to oppose the anticipated appointment of red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan as a Cabinet member.

Chalong said Jatuporn should clear his name about his alleged offence against the monarchy before accepting his ministerial portfolio, otherwise he would become a government's time bomb.

"Prime Minister Pu should reconsider bringing Jatuporn into the Cabinet," he said, referring to PM Yingluck Shinawatra by her nickname.

He was reacting to news reports that Jatuporn might replace Deputy Interior Minister Chuchard Hansaward. He said the replacement, if happened, would unfairly impact on the quota of Cabinet seats allocated to Pheu Thai MPs from the Central Region.

Jatuporn has been named a lese majeste suspect in the investigation related to his rally speech last April to mark the blood spilled by the red shirts on Rajdamnoen Avenue.

"He said the replacement, if happened, would unfairly impact on the quota of Cabinet seats allocated to Pheu Thai MPs from the Central Region."

In any normal country the cabinet ministers are chosen because of specific knowledge or experience, not just because they come from a specific clique.

Thaksin in particular seems to like to constantly reshuffle numerous posts meaning even if someone was actually competent at a particular job they won't be there long as the big T needs to keep some other cronies happy. Total farce as usual.

Sad state of affairs and one of many reasons Thailand seems to be going backwards. Within a very short time Cambodia, Laos and Burma can all eclipse Thailand at this rate. The country has at best stagnated over the past decade.

In most countries, ministers are decided by factions.

They might consider some of the other serious charges he faces before promoting him - but then again, that's why he got a seat in the first place.

Things might get very ugly with the reds if things go against him in the Constitution Court and he is forced to face those charges. Having their heroes spend the rest of their life in jail doesn't fit in at all with Thaksin's promises.

No Thai politician spends the 'rest of their life in jail'. More likely at the golf course.

..........in Dubai? Jatuporn doesn't have enough money or influence, and he really isn't worth the bother to those who have.

I was thinking of Suchinda Kraprayoon, the 1992 coup maker, golfing, I believe, in Chonburi... but the arrogant Thaksin is an exception in that he can never play the Thai political game. A real sore loser. As for Jatuporn, I'm not sure how much Thaksin may have paid him, but his buddy the more dangerous Natthawut is said to have received upwards of THB 200 million - no nameable source, just a knowlegeable FCCT correspondent, therefore unverifiable - which is enough for a few rounds of golf just about anywhere.

Being cynical Chalong Raewrang is looking after his own interests, less cynically he is concerned for his party. Which attitude you prefer to adopt will depend upon your knowledge of the man and whether you think it possible for a Thai politician to think and behave ethically.

Well I don't know about his reasons but at least the logic is sensible.

suspect dealings involving tens of millions of baht for both Jatuporn and Natthawut

from the Assets Of New Cabinet Ministers Announced thread:

- Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Natthawut Saikua at 16 million baht

I wonder if the indicted Red Shirt Leader will end up having further explaining to do with his cohort Red Shirt Leaders like last time? unsure.png

I also wonder how he's lost millions of baht in assets since 2007 when he had 20 million baht in just one stockholding... ermm.gif

Senator: Former PM's Office Minister Failed to Report All Assets

A Senator has unveiled a suspicious move by the former Prime Minister's Office Minister involving holding shares in a company that produced a pro-government TV show on NBT. The share-holding was not reported to the National Counter Corruption Commission.

Senator Ruangkrai Leekitwattana disclosed additional evidence about the shareholder of Phuanphong Nongphee Company, the producer of the government-hosted TV program, Kwam Jing Wannee" or "Today's Truth" on NBT.

According to the company's shareholder information as of April 30th, 2007, he said that Deputy Government Spokesman Nattawut Saikua holds 200,000 shares in the company totaling 20 million baht, while party-list MP from People Power Party, Jatuporn Promphan and a Party executive of the former Thai Rak Thai Party, Veera Musikapong hold 100,000 shares totaling ten million baht each.

All were members of the pro-Thaksin Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship.

Ruangkrai wondered about the source of income the three used for the share procurement valued at 30 million baht.

He added that Deputy Government Spokesman Nattawut sold 100,000 of shares worth ten million baht to former Prime Minister's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair on June 4th, 2007.

However, in accordance with the asset declaration to the National Counter Corruption Commission, it has been discovered that Jakrapob has assets totaling nine million baht.

Ruangkrai is also suspicious about the share transfers of all the company's equity holders to other individuals during the general election period between October 31st of 2007 and January 15th of 2008.

Jatuporn not fit for Cabinet seat: Chalong

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A Pheu Thai Party MP yesterday voiced his opposition to red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan's possible appointment to the Cabinet, saying that his legal problems disqualified him from the job.

MP Chalong Riewraeng said he believed that several other politicians in the ruling party agreed with him although they did not dare speak about it in public.

"Jatuporn should not be made a Cabinet member. He faces lese majeste charges and a court verdict on the case is expected in a month. If he is not found guilty, then it won't be too late to make him a minister," Chalong said.

He added that Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra might feel uneasy about having to answer questions about why she appointed a man involved in the 2010 unrest and the "burning of the city" to her Cabinet.

It has been speculated that Jatuporn might be named deputy interior minister in a Cabinet reshuffle that is expected soon. He was recently promised a Cabinet seat by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is believed to be pulling the strings of the ruling party and government.

Chalong explained that he made this comment out of good intentions for the Pheu Thai Party and the political atmosphere. "I have no bias against Jatuporn. I just do not want the party to be viewed in a bad light or the good political atmosphere to be destroyed," he said.

The politician also said that many deserving people in the party, such as Mingkwan Sangsuwan, had not been appointed to the Cabinet. "It seems like Cabinet seats are being used as rewards," he added.

Pheu Thai MP and red-shirt leader Korkaew Pikulthong said the prime minister had the power to make the final decision about Cabinet appointments, adding that Chalong's comments confirmed an earlier rumour that Pheu Thai MPs from the Central region were campaigning against Jatuporn's appointment to the Cabinet. Korkaew said Jatuporn had contributed more to the party than Chalong.

Frankly I think Jatuporn fits in perfectly with this rogue's gallery that makes the the cabinet now. I love having him in the spotlight, because the spotlight is usually on the incredibly stupid things he says on a daily basis, and it gives me a laugh. Bring him on!
