Singer gets 8 years for selling drugs

Published on December 30, 2005

Singer Pornpun Ratana-methanont, or Joyce of “Triumphs Kingdom”, was sentenced by the Ratchada criminal court yesterday to eight years and one month in jail for selling drugs.

Her boyfriend was sentenced to 33 years and four months.

Pornpun, who appeared in court in prison uniform, was surrounded by relatives and friends, including her “Triumphs Kingdom” partner Surattanavee Suviporn, or Bo, and seemed relieved at the leniency of her sentence.

Pornpun, 24, was arrested along with her boyfriend, Jittapat Sangkhasuwan, 28, at Soi Ngamwongwan 8 with 300 methamphetamine tablets in their possession. Police found a further 4,040 methamphetamine tablets in Jittapat’s home.

The two appeared in court together with another suspect, Nimitr Pengsiri, 27, who was arrested later.

Pornpun and Jittapat confessed to the crime during the police investigation but pleaded not guilty during their court case, while Nimitr claimed his innocence throughout the investigation and trial.

The court sentenced Pornpun to 12 years in jail but reduced it to eight years because of her confession and cooperation during the investigation. She was also fined Bt340,000. She was given an additional one month in prison on a drink-driving charge.

Jittapat was initially sentenced to life, reduced to 33 years and four months, and fined Bt800,000.

The court acquitted Nimitr but ordered him to remain in detention during the appeal period.
