Hi, just looking for some advice from women living in chiang rai. I've recently moved to Huai Sak with my husband who is from here (I'm English) we were living in Bangkok before. I don't really know the area at all yet and I'm hoping somebody can advice me about hospitals as I've just found out I'm pregnant. Would love to hear from anyone who has given birth here or is pregnant at the moment to find out their experiences. Are there any expecting mum's groups or looking ahead mum's and baby groups? Thai or farang, my Thai is ok.

Thanks so much, will be grateful for any advice!!

We have known a few Thai mothers who benefitted from baby groups in Hawaii and elsewhere but in Thailand the extended family is such that few Thais need to venture beyond the family structure for support.

Depending how religious you are, you may or may not, fit in with the church groups where I suspect most couples would not be mixed. Huai Sak may not have what you are looking for but it is not too far from Chiang Rai, depending on what kind of transportation you have.

At the top of the page is a link to the Chiang Rai map which I assume has links to the few hospitals we have in town. Overbrook and Sriburin would be my recommendations.

I admire your daring and sense of adventure to take on moving to the countryside and having a child all at the same time. Best of luck

A quick look at my profile and you will see how much I am “liked” by the rest of the TV community. It is only the insecure Chiang Rai reprobates that find me distasteful. Obviously harrry and scea are exceptions and a class above.tongue.pnglaugh.pngthumbsup.gif

Besides I was just trying to get in touch with my inner female side to answer the OP’s question and see how it would play on this small stage.

Thanks so much for everyone's help, it's a great start. I suspected that it would be hard to find mum and baby groups given the big family style here but worth a try. I have lots of lovely people living around us here (including lots of family) but sometimes it's nice to escape a bit and meet other people (have an opportunity to speak english sometimes too - give my poor brain a rest!!) especially as this set up is all new to me. Thanks again :-)

It's nice to see so many ladies with recent Childbirth & parenting experience have replied.

There's a very popular Doctor in CR, I'll try to recall where he's located. His place is usually bursting at the seems with pregnant women.

My wife had two Children in the UK, and one here in CR and it was a more pleasant , (for want of a better word) experience for her I think.

nothing to worry about.

Welcome to CR ;-)

come to the Hash on Saturday. You can talk to a few mothers there

The question with Jekyll and Hyde in my case would be, who’s who.beatdeadhorse.gifpassifier.gifcrazy.gif or coffee1.gif

Dr Athitaya at Overbrook is very good and so is the female doctor at Sriburin (sorry, don't know her name but my neighbour had a child there yesterday). There is also a male doctor at Sriburin, Dr Anupong, but he is more concerned with himself than the welfare of mother & child.

Good luck.

My wifes (Thai) English is ok and I know she would love to chat with you, she has a 2 and 3 year old. We are in Chiang Saen and I will be back there in July, so if you fancy a trip let us know

Have to agree about Dr.Athitaya. She delivered my son and she was great.

Dr.Chulaphon at the Thai goverment hospital is also very popular

That sounds good, will try out Dr Athitaya at Overbrook then. Are there different packages you buy depending on what level of care/ type of birth you want etc?

On another note...what is a hash? Sounds interesting! We will be away for about 5/6 days so won't be able to make this Saturday but still curious!! Forgive my ignorance!!!

Thanks :-)

Better to go to her clinic first,. Its opposite the Greenwing Motorcycle Company on Phahonyothin road.a little bit south of the Wiang Inn hotel. She will give you a price depending on what you want.

The hash is Hash House Harriers

You can come to the Pot Luck on the last Sunday of the month too. Check out the thread in this forum called Pot Luck.

Nikki321,

Our Hash is sort of a 'soft Drinks and leisurely walking' club. we do have almost a handful of people who run, and a handful of people who run and then drink beer afterwards, you have to take your hat off to this hardcore minority who try to keep the Centuries Old hashing traditions alive, by occasionally drinking Beer and showing there bottoms. There always seems to be lots of women and children and babies around which is why I mentioned it.

Likewise the Potluck but it's forbodden to show your bottom , so you must resist the desire biggrin.png

I will try to stop myself, can't promise anything though ;-) sounds fun!! This weekend we are driving to Bangkok so will miss the hash but may be back in time for the potluck if all goes according to plan (sorting out visa for husband and me to go to uk in sept)

On another note...anywhere that sells tasty whole wheat homemade bread? One of the downsides of pregnancy is I have completely gone off Thai food having previously loved it (it's causing a lot of distress here with the family!!) all I want to eat is English style comfort food like baked potatoes and toast with marmite!!! Very inconvenient ;-)

So the Potluck sounds like what your after. I've not been for ages but I do know there's a lady who goes who bakes beautiful bread on occasion.

The other Western food may satisfy your cravings too, may have to take your own marmite.

Your lucky you don't have cravings for Pickled Onions, .............. maybe that comes later smile.png

Don't worry about importing Marmite..you can buy it at Tops. But have you tried Vegemite?
