how about using your cell phone camera?

It would be better to install a dedicated cam out of the way, hidden behind the rear-view mirror and forget about. Its there when you have an incident.

Remembering to install the phone in a dash-cradle each time you get into the car is going to become a headache. And for some bad-luck would arrive at a time when the phone has been forgotten.

The phone will not record on a loop (unless you can get specialised software).

I suspect the use of a phone is a 'clumsy' solution, better than nothing, but not better than a dedicated cam.

There are now lots of places in Thailand which sell dash cams... i.e. online Monzy shop etc...

I have the BlackVue DR500GW-HD Wifi model installed in one car and the DR400G-HD II installed in another.

I've wired the cables through the upholstery into the 12v power port (which is hidden out of the way in centre console storage in both cars). I've not yet installed the power magic which will require extra work to hard-wire it directly to the battery or into the fuse.

I have tried to find 'fuse-taps' in Thailand but can't. Once I have found the fuse taps I'll hardwire one of the Cams directly into the fuse box (so that the Cam also records in Park Mode).

For the second Cam I need to hard wire it through the firewall directly to the battery (due to the design of the electrics), I'll do this when I have more time.

For now both cams work on a 'power on' only mode (i.e. ignition on while driving and not parking) and I'm perfectly happy with this system. Using the existing 12v power port also removes any ability regarding the warranty on a new car.

The DR500GR HD model (which I ordered through Monzyshop online: 7990 baht) appears to be a very good cam - I've had it working a week now. I can connect directly to it through wifi on my iPhone (android also works), I can view the live image, recordings and / or download them for later viewing.

The cam can also be trigged to record 'locked files' (that are not over written on the loop) when any of the 3 axial 'G settings' are exceeded. The G-Settings can be easily configured through the software using either the phone or plugging the mini-SD card into a computer and uploading the latest settings to the camera.

Note: Instructions and the cam are in Korean - However online instructions can be downloaded in English, but the Cam Firmware and language is in Korean only (I just turn off the camera's sound as I don't need it to tell me its recording in Korean !).

Yes. I'm very happy with the Cam.

The Wifi function is very handy... But also a little annoying in that when I get in my Car the Phone automatically connects to my Dash-cam through Wifi thus over-riding the phones 3G. If I forget to turn off the Wifi on my phone I won't get e-mails or Whatsapp message etc...

I don't have Park Mode. I haven't hard wired the Cam to the Battery. This is possible, but its a little tricky on a BWM.

The attached photo is of my Cam Installation - Contrary to one posters comment, the installation is not cluttered, I can't see the Cam from my driving position, there are no exposes cables once run through the upholstery.

Also accompanying this comment is a ScreenCapture from the Video - the Cam has 120 degree width of vision (Video quality is actually better than this poor screen capture).

I've recently purchased ,and very quickly installed a drive pro 200 unit , so far so good easy to use , wifi's to your phone , good day and night picture .

Yesterday it seemed to deter the BiB collecting his tea money , when he spotted it .

I just want to record a bicycle ride up the river so my family in England can see, nothing special. Things like that.....show them the area where I live.

Can anyone answer a simple question:

I already have a dashcam in the car it was only about 350 baht seems to work ok.

I presume when the SD card is full these cameras loop to start again?

So as one only really needs the small bit of time before an accident recorded, I only bought a 4gb SD.

Is my rationale correct?

She's rapidly becoming my tech-whizz and ran the wiring neatly to the lighter and set it all up.

Who am I to say No?

Mine only mine kept on saying FULL but she's done something seems to keep recording now.

Amazing value!

(The picture would be just fine for the bicycle cam.)

There are so many out there and of such variable qualify that buying well is a bit of a headache. I just came across this site Dashcam Talk which has the most unbiased (looking) reviews as well as an owners forum - hope it helps! Having looked at a depressing hour of Russian accidents caught on video I think a front/rear combo is the way to go. Pricier but much more useful I would think.

I have two LS430W cameras one front and one for the rear.

I got mine from a local supplier to avoid the possible hassle with international delivery.

Sorry seems they don't have an English version,

The cameras have worked just fine for the couple of years I've had them. The picture quality is excellent, probably one of the best on the market, especially at night.

Just one problem with the small internal battery failing to hold a charge after about a year, but this is probably a problem that will come up with all makes of cameras.

The camera is a bit pricy, especially compared to the ones from the local market but I feel it's money well spent for the knowledge that it will work when you actually need it.
