Settling Down

I was wondering how long it took for those of you, who moved to Thailand for good, to settle down as a family? What did you do in the time in-between and was it a stress factor for the family?

Moving is always a stress factor, especially to another country and different culture. How quickly you adjust depends on the person, but it can take a long time.

I myself didn't settle here with a family, but after being in Thailand many times and for long periods of time the final move was still a stressfull event, as at that moment you leave everything behind and it is also a goodbye to friends and family. I have never been homesick, till the actual move to Thailand instead of extended holiday. That lasted at least half a year.

But no regrets. A lot is different in Thailand, which is one of the charmes, and there is a lot to complain about. But you must realize that there is also a lot to complain about your own country. Thailand isn't paradise, but it certainly isn't hell.

It is just a different country, with a different culture and different value.

An important factor is also always how quickly you will have new friends and a social life.

Children will always adjust the quickest and the younger they are the easier they will pick-up the language.

11 years and will never settle down with a family here. A few crazy gf's cured me of that. (No not bar girls, well not all of them )

If I had kids I would never allow them to be raised in Thailand. Everyday them seeing the lack of respect for laws and lax attitude towards safety, corruption, the environment, cheating in school, etc. etc..no I don't want them learning life the Thai way.

Yet for me, I love it here. The only time I am homesick is when I go home.
