แฃ่บ Why The Need For "่" (Mai Ek)?

Featured Replies

Ok so a question thats bugging me.

I saw a sign on a restaurant saying.แฃ่บ . Is this a misspelling? Surely the mai ek is unecessary as it would have the same tone without (falling).

Am I missing something?

It's an Isaan word and it is always spelled like that in Thai letters as far as I know. Possibly to denote a slightly different tone. Thai people usually snigger a little after saying it, they find even one or two words in the Lao language/Isaan dialects hilarious.

Possibly to make the pronunciation shorter?

Words with ่ that are in the low class of consonants are pronunced with a shorter sound.

Just a guess...

There was an extensive thread about this very word and spelling about 3-4 years ago. Suggest you search or trawl through the forum to find it.

Yes, แฃ่บ is a misspelling - the OP's. It should be spelt แซ่บ, with so so, not with kho khuat. The thread where it was discussed before is http://www.thaivisa....&-3656;&-3610;/ .
