Is there a word for instant noodles in Thai? I asked my wife and she insists the only word is มาม่า but I could swear there was another word used to describe instant noodles in general though I know Mama is the major brand.

As you say MaMa is a brand but they call all "Instant Noodle" MaMa - so also my wife. Actually, it has become a generic term in Thailand. But the general term for it is บะหมี่(กึ่ง)สำเร็จรูป = "Instant Noodle with schrimp", in this example here.

I don't know where you're getting the word "shrimp" from. but กึ่ง is not shrimp but means like "semi" or half. กุ้ง is shrimp.

The correct term is indeed บะหมี่กึ่งสำเร็จรูป which means something like semi readymade noodles

สำเร็จรูป Sam Ret Rup Is the term for instant and is used with many things i.e., noodles, coffee, etc............

to clarify a bit more กึ่ง in that word is "semi" ... so it's semi-instant noodles if translated word-to-word from Thai.

"Mama " is the first band of instant noodles . Now Thai people usually called instant noodles is "Mama"

But i like "Yum Yum" (band of instant noodles)

Same in case "Fab"(แฟป) is the first band of washing powder (you can ask your wife 555) .
