Chula team to represent Thailand in Paris

BANGKOK: -- A team of students from Chulalongkorn University have won the national finals of "L'Oreal Brandstorm 2012" and will represent Thailand at an international contest on marketing strategies in Paris next week.

The winning team, "Lycopene", consisted of Kanyanat Piticharoen from the Faculty of Communication Arts, Kriangkrai Pipatvilaikul from the Faculty of Engineering and Korakot Asvalertson from the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy.

Maintaining its demanding standards, "L'Oreal Brandstorm 2012" required competitors to assume the role of the brand manager of The Body Shop, create an innovative new product and set up a marketing plan for it. The team proposed "DEW", a facial spray containing Lycopene, a carotene found in red fruits and vegetables, which can be used to revive and protect the skin all day long.

Kanyanat Piticharoen, the team's representative, said the contest meant a lot to them because it took them out of the classroom and put them in a real-life competition.

"We were under a great deal of pressure because our competitors came mostly from the marketing field and were all driven to win. I think we found our strength in our diversified approach," she said.

Fifty-one teams from leading universities across the nation participated in the contest, in which the adjudicating committee from the advertising and media industry selected four teams for the national finals.

The Lycopene team won Bt70,000, the Topshop team from Mahidol University came second, winning Bt40,000, followed by the KCA team also from Mahidol, which won Bt30,000.

Umesh Phadke, managing director of L'Oreal (Thailand), said: "L'Oreal Brandstorm gave undergraduate students, who might become marketers in the future, an opportunity to learn to develop marketing strategies for beauty products that exist in the real world and succeed on a global scale.

"We are glad to help Thai youth to get out there and hone their capabilities outside the classroom and compete at am international level," he said.

Since 1993, L'Oreal has been inviting students from across the world to challenge their abilities by taking part in the L’Oreal Brandstorm international competition. The contest provides competitors with a unique opportunity to experience the realities of working in a global marketing environment, by working as a brand manager. Students are assigned a case study with the challenge to analyse the market, build a new marketing strategy, design the packaging for a product range and develop a communications campaign with a real-world advertising agency.
