andyth
I probably need a hip replacement. At the moment I'm thinking of Bumrungrad hospital, but have little idea of their experience or expertise, though on their website they claim to have done 2,500 in the last decade (I think). Does anyone know of an experienced and skillful surgeon specialising in hip replacements either at Bumrungrad or any other good hospital. A medical friend in the states has advised me to find someone who's done at least 500 operations. I think I'm unlikely to find such a person in Thailand, but I'd want someone whose experienc is in the hundreds. Cost is not a particularly significant issue. Sheryl
Oh, I think you may. There is a lot of experience with joint replacements here (the military hospitals have been perfroming them for at least 15 years). Vejthani Hospital is also reputed to be quite good for this, they have a dedicated Total Joint Replacement Clinic and other TV members have reported favorably on hip replacements done there. This doc is the director of that clinic & has been doing replacements since 1994 http://www.vejthani.com/web-english/Our-Physicians/Our-Physicians.php?id_sr=193. There are also at least 2 US trained surgeons at the TJR clinic there, see below (they also have priveleges at Bumrungrad) Bumrungrad has been doing them for quite a while too and has a number of US trained orthopedic surgeons with expertise in joint replacementse.g.: Name: Dr. Areesak Chotivichit Qualifications: Medical School: - M.D., Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, 1982 Board Certifications: - Diplomate of The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, 1994, Recertified 2005 Fellowships: - Total Joint Replacement, University of California, Los Angeles, USA, 1986-1987 - Spinal Reconstructive Surgery, Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Medicine, Baltimore, USA, 1996-1997 Academic Rank: Associate Professor, Mahidol University, Thailand Special Clinical Trainings: - The Intelligent Hip Surgery Course Articular Surface Replacement Live Surgery, Chulalongkorn University, 2005 Special Clinical Interests: - Spine - Total Joint Replacement or Name: Dr. Keerati Charoencholvanich Qualifications: Medical School: - M.D., Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, 1988 Board Certifications: - Diploma of Thai Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, 1994 Fellowships: - Total Joint Clinical and Research, Hennepin Country Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, 1995-1996 - Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomechanics Research, Midwest Orthopaedic Research Foundation, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, 1995-1997 Academic Rank: Associate Professor, Mahidol University Special Clinical Interests: - Adult Reconstructive Surgery - Hip & Knee Arthroplasty or Name: Dr. Srihatach Ngarmukos Qualifications: Medical School: - M.D., Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, 1998 Board Certifications: - Diploma of The Thai Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, 2003 Fellowships: - Adult Reconstructive Surgery and Total Joint Replacement, Stanford University Medical Center, USA, 2004-2005 Special Clinical Interests: - Minimally invasive joint replacement Note: he is also at the TJR Clinic at Vejthani or Dr. Viroj Larbpaiboonpong Qualifications: Medical School: - M.D., Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, 1993 Board Certifications: - Diploma of The Thai Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, 1998 Fellowships: - Knee Reconstruction and Sports Medicine, The Insall Scott Kelly Institutes, New York, USA, 2001 - Arthroplasty Surgery, Monash Medical Centre, Australia, 2002 Special Clinical Trainings: - Team Physician Development Course Special Clinical Interests: - Hip - Knee - Hip Resurfacing Note: he is also at the TJR Clinic at Vejthani
andyth
Sheryl, I'm very grateful indeed for such detailed and helpful information. I don't feel I'm groping in the dark now. If anyone has had direct experience, i.e. has had a hip replacement in Thailand in the Bangkok/Chonburi area, I'd be very interested to hear about their experiences.
