Computer Printer - Inkjet Or Color Laser?

Recommended Posts

My Canon MP610 inkjet printer (with scanner) just burnt out (circuit board), and it's too expensive to repair (5,000 baht!). Can someone recommend a good place to start here in Chiang Mai? Siam TV? Airport Central? Anybody had good experience with Canon or HP or Samsung? Thanks very much!

I see the Samsung CLP-325W Color Laser Printer sells for only $199.99 in USA, but don'y know if this one is available in Chiang Mai, price, etc.

over many years, i have had personal color laser and injets... and in my workplace, i also used both.

largely, it depends on what you are going to use it for... if it is just home, personal use, i would opt for the inkjet printer... laser cartridges, while lasting longer, are very expensive. Laser printers are faster and if you require speed, they are what you want.

Inkjets are very high quality these days and relatively cheap. The cost of the ink is what will get you. You can search online for true cost of per page printing for each of the machines you are considering.... if you want photos that last, don't bother with those large tank work arounds that are offered here... if it is for your HS kids however, you might consider the large tanks as they will go thru prints like crazy, usually.

I have owned Epson, HP and Canons over the years and personally preferred the Canon print quality... but for various reasons i now own an HP AIO machine and am very happy with it.

Shop around... airport central, siam, panthip, all the usual suspects... you might find some small price differences... but generally (in panthip for instance) 4 or 5 "different" stores are all owned by same guy and prices will be the same. In the end, perhaps you want a place that you know you can get good service from = Siam TV ?

Bought my Canon A3 size Pixma 6560 at the shops next door to Amorn Electronics on Manneenoparat. It was 8000 baht, complete with outboard ink supply system, and has been brilliant. I've owned several Epson inkjets before, and I have to say the Canon is far easier to use, and produces excellent quality prints.

I bought a Canon Pixma MP287 3 in 1 printer scanner copier from computer city on the moat, its got a outboard supply for the ink and It was only 2600thb. Great Printer so far in the 6 months Ive had it. Just remember to use the auto clean function once a week.

Do you have a Makro ? last month they had a promotion on the Samsung colour laser MULTI-FUNCTION reduced to 6,999 baht from 11,450 baht..

Problem with inkjet is if you do not use often the heads dry out/ use lot of ink trying to clean, take to PC shop to sort cost 1,000 baht !!

I think above post says it all. It is largely depending on what and how much you print. Word of caution; laser printers are not great for photos. Inkjets make good photos, depending on paper and setting, they may even last a year or two. For professional quality photos, you best have them developed over the internet on real photo paper etc.

I am going with an HP all in one, as we need scanning and copying often and fax sometimes. I opted for a model with wifi support, so various computer in the house can use it all the time. Given the amount the kids print for school, retrospectively I should have opted for the ink tanks, as cartridge cost still is a killer.

One more thing, when you look at the printer, check if non-brand cartridges are available fo that model. They tend to work ok for a fraction of the cost of the original, but are not available for all models.

Agreed...lasers pretty much suck for photos and yes, wi-fi for the home network was a must for me also. Besides looking for non-brand cartridges as a way to avoid expensive printing, you can also look at refill services (or refill your own). Some printers come with a "chip" on the tanks that expires when the cartridge runs out... but there are ways around that - including little home devices that reset the expiration date on the cartridge, so that you can get it refilled.

remember, to a certain extant, you pics will only be as good as the ink you use to print with. And many of the tank models that my friends use... when pictures are put on a wall, say in the sun... within 3 months, you can barely recognize the photo. Whereas i have photos on my wall here in thailand, that i printed 5 years ago (using original inks) and they still look great.

Agree with the above. I have a Canon Pixma also. I used to have Epsons but found image quality and heads drying too quick with non-use a problem. The Pixma, I may not use it for several weeks and start it up and prints right away with no cleaning required. Not only the ink, but the paper is very important in both image quality and life. I have pictures printed and hanging for over 10 years with no sign of fading (using factory Canon inks). At that time I was able to get Konica glossy, water resistant paper and the quality is the best I've seen.
